The invention is a phosphorylcholine group-containing vinyl monomer represented by the following formula (1): in the formula (1) R represents an alkylene group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and n represents an integer of 1 to 6. The invention provides a phosphorylcholine group-containing vinyl monomer useful as a raw material for a hydrogel having a lowered water content while maintaining surface hydrophilicity.

The phosphorylcholine group-containing polysiloxane monomer of the present invention is represented by the formula (1). In the formula, a represents an integer of 20 to 500, b represents an integer of 1 to 70, c represents an integer of 1 to 70, d represents 0 or 1, p and q each represent 0 or 1, X represents —CH— or —CHCH—, and R represents an alkyl group having 2 to 18 carbon atoms. The present invention provides the phosphorylcholine group-containing polysiloxane monomer which gives, when copolymerized with a polymerizable monomer such as methacrylic acid or a hydrophilic monomer other than methacrylic acid, a polymer that exhibits surface hydrophilicity and sufficient stability as ophthalmic devices.

Provided is a monomer composition for contact lenses, which uses a polysiloxane monomer to produce a polymer that shows satisfactory surface hydrophilicity and oxygen permeability, and that is excellent in modulus and elongation at break. It has been found that a monomer composition containing a phosphorylcholine group-containing polysiloxane monomer, a monovinyl ether monomer, and the like can achieve the above-mentioned object.

Provided is a contact lens that can exhibit excellent breaking elongation and surface hydrophilicity even when produced using a hydrophobic mold made of polypropylene or the like without performing a surface hydrophilic treatment. Further provided are a monomer composition and a polymer that can be suitably used for obtaining the contact lens. This monomer composition contains (A) a siloxanyl group-containing itaconic acid diester monomer, (B) an amide group-containing monomer, (C) a hydroxy group-containing monomer, (D) a siloxanyl group-containing (meth)acrylate, and (E) a cross-linking agent in a specific ratio.

Provided is a monomer suitable for application to an ophthalmic device, the monomer showing high surface hydrophilicity, a high oxygen transmissibility, and appropriate mechanical strength when copolymerized with a polymerizable monomer, such as a hydrophilic monomer. It has been recognized that a phosphorylcholine group-containing polysiloxane monomer can solve the problems.
