Video pixel line buffers are widely used for data processing in video codecs. Video data may be packed into buffers configured to store a plurality of words, each word comprising a series of bits. The video data may be associated with two or more channels. In order to reduce realization costs, data blocks from two different channels may be packed from opposite sides of a word in the buffer in opposite directions. In some embodiments, data blocks from two or more physical channels may be mapped to two or more virtual channels, the virtual channels having balanced data block sizes. The data blocks associated with the virtual channels may then be packed to one or more buffers.

Channel line buffer data packing scheme for video codecs

An apparatus and corresponding method are provided for encoding video signal data by applying an adaptive quantizer parameter responsive to bit-rate; where a video encoder for encoding video signal data for an image block relative to at least one reference picture includes an adaptive quantizer for applying an adaptive quantizer parameter responsive to a current bit-rate; and where a corresponding method includes initializing an adaptive quantizer, calculating the bits used by the video signal data with the adaptive quantizer, assigning bits to each of a plurality of picture types, calculating a difference in adaptive quantizer responsive to the assigned bits from the previous number of bits used by the group of pictures and obtaining an updated adaptive quantizer for the video signal data, calculating an adaptive quantizer for a portion of the video signal data, encoding the portion of the video signal data, and obtaining the actual number of bits used for the encoded portion of the video signal data.

Quantizer parameter determination for video encoder rate control

Implementations include video image processing systems, methods, and apparatus for downscaling video data using a phase control multi-tap downscale filter. For example, a device configured to process video information may include a memory configured to store a downscaling filter comprising a number of coefficients. A processor may be configured to receive video input data and determine a scale factor between the video input data and a video output. In addition, the processor may be configured to modify the downscaling filter based on the scale factor and the number of coefficients in the unmodified downscaling filter. The processor may be configured to downscale the video input data using the modified downscaling filter.

Fast motion estimation for multiple reference pictures

A video processing system adaptively generates and processes volume/file structure and navigation data of different data format and converts data between different formats for decoding, recording and other applications. The system processes the volume/file structure and navigation data in distinct modes including (a) pre-processing, (b) contemporaneous and (c) post-processing modes. In addition, the system provides navigation information supporting navigation through different images of one or more video programs by parsing encoded packetized data representative of a sequence of individual images to determine parameters to support navigation through the sequence of individual images. The determined parameters are formatted into a predetermined data structure and incorporated into a pre-formed navigation data field.

Digital video processing and storage system for video, audio and ancillary data

A method () and system () for performing a trick mode on a video signal. The method includes the steps of receiving () a trick mode command, in response to the trick mode command, repeating () a picture in the video signal to form a trick mode video signal in which the picture contains a display indicator; setting () the display indicator of the picture being repeated to a predetermined value; and setting () the display indicators of subsequent repeated pictures of the picture being repeated to the predetermined value. In one arrangement, the trick mode can be a freeze trick mode, and the picture to be repeated can be a bidirectional predictive picture. In addition, the display indicator can be a temporal reference field having an integer value.

A color look-up table includes a plurality of images recorded on a film. Each of the images being recorded on a separate picture of the film and containing at least a first level and a second level. The first and second levels having different pixel color values and are arranged to form a detectable geometric pattern on each of the pictures. The first field and a second field having detectable boundaries assigned to characterize distortions on the film.

A method for media disaster recovery when recording data to re-writable disk media can include defining a sequence of recordable units (RUs) in the re-writable disk media wherein each RU in the sequence has a maximum data capacity. Data can be sequentially recorded in each RU, in sequence. When data has been completely recorded in an RU, RU metrics can be computed. Subsequently, the computed RU metrics can be stored in an RU information file in the re-writable disk media. Significantly, responsive to a media disaster, for example a power outage, a disaster RU can be identified in the RU information file. Specifically, the disaster RU can be an RU in which data had been incompletely recorded during the media disaster. Upon identifying the disaster RU, the sequential recording of data can resume in an RU next in sequence to the disaster RU.

A hybrid high-definition encoder and method are disclosed, for processing signal data as a plurality of block transform coefficients for each of base layer data and enhancement layer data, where the encoder includes a two-layer decomposition unit for decomposing an original high-definition signal data sequence into base layer data and enhancement layer data, a standard-definition encoder coupled to the decomposition unit for encoding the base layer data as a base layer bitstream embodying a standard-definition data sequence, and a high-definition encoder coupled to the decomposition unit and the standard-definition encoder for encoding only the difference between the high-definition data and the standard-definition data as base layer picture user data embodying a high-definition data sequence.

Two-layer encoding for hybrid high-definition DVD

A method, apparatus and system for image processing include a registration device configured to register component images for at least a block of an image to form a registered image. A quality control device is configured to receive the registered image, examine the registered image, and modify portions of the registered image to improve the alignment of the registered image. In one embodiment of the present invention, the quality control device includes user controls to perform quality control functions including communicating a command to the registration device to re-register an image modified by the quality control device. The user controls may include a control panel configured specifically for making the quality improvement changes required.

Method, apparatus and system for color component registration

A method for edge mapping images for use in image processing. Edge mapping includes identifying base and non-base color components. A search window in the base color component is opened and the non-base color components are compared with the base component picture. The number of matched or unmatched edge points is then calculated. The best match can then be determined through testing or manual selection.
