A first email message is received. The first email message has a first recipient email address and a first payload. The first recipient email address has a first username portion and a first domain name portion. If a user account is associated with the first username portion, then the first payload is transmitted to an email address associated with that user account. Otherwise, the first payload is transmitted, via a fax transmission method, to a first destination specified by a first destination identifier based on the first username portion of the first recipient email address.

Nested email delivery substitutes a control token into an recipient email address, and uses the result as the username in email to a domain of a secure processing server. At the secure processing server, the recipient email address is extracted, control token identified, and any attachments processed and delivered based on the control token. The secure processing server may be an internet-based secure fax server and attachments processed as native documents for high-resolution, color faxing. Delivery may also be via certified email, or native documents may be processed into workspace storage or through other configured processing. Multiple tokens may be combined to trigger multiple actions.

A secure file transfer system and a secure file transfer method for routing an electronic file or a high-definition facsimile translated from the electronic file, from a sending computing device over a digital electronic communication network to a receiving computing device. The method may include receiving, from the sending computing device, an electronic package including a modified destination identifier including a domain associated with a secure file transfer system. The electronic package may include an electronic file as an attachment. The modified destination identifier may be a modified email address having one or more other characters substituted for an original at-symbol.

The present invention is a security monitoring system which effectively monitors a large number of areas in a cost effective manner using already existing communications infrastructure. More specifically, the method and apparatus of the present invention warns at least one security post of an undesired condition at a monitored area by sending a fax of an image of the monitored area via a phone line and/or by sending an E-mail of a color image via a global telecommunications network such as the Internet. Generally, the present invention includes a camera for creating a first image of the monitored area at a first time point and for creating a second image of the monitored area at a second time point. In addition, a data storage device stores the first image and the second image, and an image processor, coupled to the data storage device, compares the first image with the second image. A modem, coupled to the image processor, sends a fax of the second image to the at least one security post if the second image is substantially different from the first image. The present invention may further send via the modem a JPEG color image of the second image as an electronic mail to a predetermined security post if the second image is substantially different from the first image.

Security system for notification of an undesired condition at a monitored area with minimized false alarms

A communications device transmits and receives information in accordance with both facsimile and electronic mail communications protocols. The communications device recognizes a destination identifier, identifying a remote communications device as either a facsimile device or an e-mail device and transmits a document in accordance with the communications protocol utilized by the identified device. The communications device also allows the retrieval of electronic mail messages stored at a remote electronic mailbox. A user enters an electronic mail address, from which messages are desired to be retrieved, and presses a Retrieve button. The communications device initiates communication with an electronic post office corresponding to the entered electronic mail address and causes transmission of electronic mail messages stored in the specified mailbox.

Facsimile data is routed from a transmitting device to a destination device. Responsive to detection at a first port of a received off-hook condition signal and of a set of destination identifying signals, a front-end router provides sequentially at a second port an off-hook signal, signals representing a stored telephone number of a store-and-forward service device, signals representing stored store-and-forward service access authorization information, signals representing the set of destination identifying signals, and a facsimile mode invoke signal. A communication path is enabled between the two ports. Data is transferred to the store-and-forward service through the router. Thereafter, responsive to detection at the first port of a received on-hook condition signal, an on-hook condition signal is provided at the second port.

Facsimile front end router

A controller for transferring data between a plurality of data storage and retrieval devices and a plurality of computer workstations, and which is especially applicable to transferring bit-mapped image data. The controller responds to requests from a plurality of ports on the controller, connected to computers or similar devices, for connection to selected ones of a plurality of channels connected to the data retrieval devices. The connect request is decoded by the controller, and if the requested channel is available, the controller will interconnect the two devices. The controller allows simultaneous access by any of the ports to any of the channels not being used by another port. The device is in modular form so that a single design can be configured to efficiently operate in different applications. The controller is cascadable to allow larger numbers of devices to be connected. Only four serial data lines are necessary for interfacing with each computer and storage device making the installation of the connections relatively easy and economical.

In other aspects, circuitry is used to identify the upper and lower boundaries along one dimension of the writing surface, of a local region at which writing stimuli are being received; the writing surface is scanned to identify the coordinate value along one dimension of a point at which writing stimuli are being received, by scanning respectively different predetermined portions of the writing surface along that one dimension, all of the portions being scanned simultaneously; a local zone is defined in the vicinity of an identified point of touching, and limits the scanning to that local zone; and a portion of the writing surface includes key zones and a particular digital symbol is generated in response to writing stimuli being received at any of the locations corresponding to one of the key zones.
