A fiber-optic interferometer is provided. The interferometer includes a first dual-mode optical fiber for receiving a light input and exciting a first and a second spatial, modes, a first modal processor connected to the first dual-mode optical fiber for selecting the first and the second spatial modes, a second dual-mode optical fiber connected to the first modal processor for propagating the first and the second spatial modes and producing a phase shift (&#x394;&#x3c6;) between the first and the second spatial modes in response to an external perturbation effect, a second modal processor connected to the second dual-mode optical fiber for re-selecting the first and the second spatial modes and producing a first light output interference pattern, and an analyzer connected to the second modal filter for adjusting the first light output interference pattern to produce a second light output interference pattern.

A device for enhancing the linear polarization intensity of light which passes through a polarizer is provided, which comprises: a prepolarizer receiving incident natural light and splitting the natural light into a plurality of polarized light beams with different polarization directions, changing the polarization direction of the light beams, thereby enhancing the light intensity of a particular polarization direction; and a polarizer having polarization direction the same as that of the prepolarizer, receiving the light emitted from the prepolarizer, and then converting the light into a linearly polarized light.

A closed-cavity liquid-crystal display is provided, which is a liquid-crystal display having a wide angle of view. The liquid-crystal display comprises: an insulator layer formed with a plurality of cavities extending completely through the insulating layer, in which liquid-crystal material is filled into the plurality of cavities; a first substrate, placed on one side of the insulator layer, in which a first electrode is formed on one side of the first substrate near the insulator layer; and a second substrate, placed on the other side of the insulator layer, in which a second electrode is formed on one side of the second substrate near the insulator layer, so that the first electrode and the second electrode are used to drive and vary the alignment of liquid-crystal molecules in the plurality of cavities. The inner circumference of the closed cavity is coated with a homeotropic alignment agent, so that the alignment of the liquid-crystal molecules is circularly symmetric, and the optical performance of the liquid-crystal display is independent of the azimuthal angle.

An apparatus for selecting waveguide modes in optical fibers is disclosed, which comprises an optical fiber having of a core and a cladding sheathing the core. The optical fiber has a selected portion of the cladding removed and forms a recessed space in the cladding while preserving a predetermined thickness of the cladding remaining covering the core. The optical fiber is selected for allowing the transmission of light having multiple waveguide modes with radial and azimuthal electric field components. The apparatus further comprises a birefringent material filled in the recessed space. The birefringent material has the first and second refractive indices and the first refractive index is larger than the core index of the optical fiber, while the second refractive index is smaller than the cladding index of the optical fiber. The first and second refractive indices of the birefringent material are arranged in the radial and azimuthal directions of the optical fiber respectively, so that the transmitted light of the waveguide mode with the radial electric field component is coupled out from the core of the optical fiber to the selective portion of the cladding, and the transmitted light of the waveguide mode with only the azimuthal electric field component remains transmitted through the optical fiber.
