A digital subscriber line (DSL) communication system that utilizes the high frequency band of a standard telephone line does not require the use of a plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter in the resident's home, which provided isolation between the POTS frequency band (0 to 4 kHz) and the DSL frequency band. A digital subscriber line modem utilizes either constant envelope modulation or quadrature amplitude modulation for outputting DSL signals upstream to a central office. When a telephone in the resident's home is detected as being off-hook, then the constant envelope modulation is used by the DSL modem in order to lessen the intermodulation product distortion that results in audible noise heard by a user of the telephone. When the telephone is on-hook, then another type of modulation, such as QAM, is used to maximize the upstream data rate capability in the DSL frequency band, since any noise generated by the QAM is not a problem due to the non-use of the POTS frequency band.

Adaptive analog equalization. The present invention provides an analog equalization solution that is assured to converge irrespective of the initial conditions of the adaptation. For very high frequency communication applications, including DS3 or E3 line code applications operating at frequencies approaching 45 MHz, the analog adaptive equalization employs double sampling. One of the samples is used to make the decision if a transition actually goes to zero, and the other of the samples is used to drive the adaptation loop to converge. The present invention employs a high pass network and an adaptable gain to control an adaptive analog equalizer structure. There are two different feedback paths to ensure convergence of the present invention. In one embodiment, one feedback path is the gain control feedback path that is provided to the adaptive analog equalizer structure. The other feedback path is provided to a variable gain amplifier. The analog adaptive equalizer structure employs an adaptive equalizer circuitry that has a transfer function that is essentially the inverse of a communication channel from which a signal is provided.

A system, method, and signal are disclosed for line probing. The invention provides an improved signal for line probing having desirable characteristics. In various embodiments the signal comprises a periodic sequence having good autocorrelation characteristics. The periodic sequence of the invention provides a faster and more accurate evaluation of the channel. Another embodiment of the invention comprises processing of the received sequence to determine a desired or maximum data rate for the line or channel. The invention also provides an evaluation and calculation of the noise on the line or channel.

The synchronization error generator is configured as a leaking integrator to provide the synchronization error signal in response to a relatively large number of frame error signals occurring in a period of time. A resynchronization operation is performed in the modem in response to the synchronization error signal.
