An image forming apparatus includes an image bearing member, a voltage applying portion, a feeding portion, a detecting portion, a storing portion, a controller for controlling a first operation in which on the basis of a detection result of the detecting portion, a kind of the recording material set in the feeding portion is stored in the storing portion, and a second operation in which an adjusting chart is outputted for adjusting a transfer voltage; and an inputting portion. In response to a single start instruction, the controller is capable of carrying out control so as to execute the first operation and the second operation for outputting the adjusting chart prepared by transferring a plurality of test images onto the recording material from which an index interrelating with the kind of the recording material is detected by the detecting portion in the first operation.

The control unit executes a mode of detecting the image density of the toner image for control. The control unit sets the target toner density so that the target toner density becomes smaller than before execution of the mode and also set the target transfer current so that the target transfer current becomes smaller, in a case where the image density detected in the mode is higher by a predetermined threshold or more than a reference density.

In an image forming apparatus, a cleaning blade, disposed on a downstream side of a transfer roller in a rotation direction of an image carrier, removes toner remaining on the image carrier after transfer of a toner image to an intermediate transfer member. An image forming apparatus includes a belt, an outer roller, stretching rollers including an inner roller and an upstream roller, a voltage source, a supporting member, a moving mechanism, a sensor, and a controller. An image forming apparatus includes a control unit configured to execute a first mode and a second mode of forming images on first through third image bearing members. In the first mode, a toner image is formed on a third image bearing member without having toner images formed on the first and second image bearing members in a state where the first through third image bearing members are abutted against an intermediate transfer body. In the first mode, the control unit controls at least a first charging device such that a primary transfer contrast in a first primary transfer portion is set to be equal to or greater than a discharge starting voltage, and applies an AC voltage to a second charging device such that a discharge current having a current quantity smaller than that in the second mode is supplied.

In a black monochromatic mode, an intermediary transfer belt is separated from an upstream photosensitive drum in a state in which a downstream photosensitive drum contacts the intermediary transfer belt. At this time, a stretching roller is moved upwardly in interrelation with a contact-separation mechanism to increase an angle of contact of the intermediary transfer belt with the downstream photosensitive drum compared with the case of a full-color mode. On the other hand, in the full-color mode, the stretching roller is moved downwardly to be separated from an inner surface of the intermediary transfer belt.
