A composite circuit protection device includes a laminar insulating member and first and second laminar circuit protection devices. Each of the first and second laminar circuit protection devices includes (1) a first laminar electrode, (2) a second laminar electrode, (3) a laminar PTC resistive element which (i) exhibits PTC behavior, (ii) has a first face to which the first electrode is secured and an opposite second face to which the second electrode is secured, and (iii) defines first and second apertures which run between the first and second faces, (4) a third laminar conductive member which (i) is secured to the second face of the PTC resistive element in the area of the first aperture, and (ii) is spaced apart from the second electrode, (5) a fourth laminar conductive member which (i) is secured to the first face of the PTC resistive element in the area of the second aperture, and (ii) is spaced apart from the first electrode, (6) a first transverse conductive member which lies within the first aperture defined by the PTC resistive element, runs between the first and second faces of the PTC element, is secured to the PTC element, and is physically and electrically connected to the first laminar electrode and to the third laminar conductive member, but is not connected to the second laminar electrode, and (7) a second transverse conductive member which lies within the second aperture defined by the PTC resistive element, runs between the first and second faces of the PTC element, is secured to the PTC element, and is physically and electrically connected to the second laminar electrode and to the fourth laminar conductive member, but is not connected to the first laminar electrode. The first and second laminar devices are physically secured together in a stacked configuration, with the laminar insulating member between them; and the devices are connected together electrically by interfacial electrical connections between adjacent electrodes and laminar conductive members so that when an electrical power supply is connected to (i) one of the electrodes and (ii) the third or fourth laminar member on the same face of the PTC resistive element as the electrode (i), the first and second laminar circuit protection devices are connected electrically in parallel.

A temperature-sensing apparatus which is placed in contact with a plurality of batteries, e.g. secondary batteries, connected in series. The temperature sensing apparatus can be connected to a power source and a current measuring device to detect increases in the temperature of the battery. Each temperature-sensing section in contact with individual secondary batteries comprises a PTC element and electrode sheets in contact with and sandwiching the PTC element on the top and bottom, the electrode sheets being in a staggered and overlapping relationship.

Laminar electrical devices, in particular circuit protection devices, contain two laminar electrodes, with a PTC element between them, and a cross-conductor which passes through the thickness of the device and contacts one only of the two electrodes. This permits connection to both electrodes from the same side of the device. The device also includes layers of solder on the areas of the device through which connection is made, and separation and/or masking members which (a) reduce the danger of short circuits formed by solder flow during installation of the device and/or (b) provide a site for permanent marking of the device.

PTC electrical devices for installation on printed circuit boards

A circuit protection device which comprises first and second laminar electrodes; a laminar PTC conductive polymer resistive element sandwiched between the electrodes; a third laminar conductive member which is secured to the same face of the PTC element as the second electrode but is separated therefrom; and an electrical connector which connects the third conductive member and the first electrode. This permits connection to both electrodes from the same side of the device, so that the device can be connected flat on a printed circuit board, with the first electrode on top, without any need for leads. The connector is preferably a cross-conductor which passes through an aperture in the PTC element, because this makes it possible to carry out the steps for preparing the devices on an assembly which corresponds to a number of individual devices, with division of the assembly as the final step.

Method of preparing planar PTC circuit protection devices

An electrical device in which a conductive terminal is physically and electrically attached directly or indirectly to a face of a laminar PTC resistive element. The terminal comprises a laminar portion and a non-laminar shaped portion which lies within a projection of the periphery of the PTC resistive element. The shaped portion serves to improve thermal transfer between the PTC element and the atmosphere surrounding the device. Devices of the invention are useful as circuit protection devices.

Electrical device

An electrical device in which a first connection element is in electrical contact with a resistive element. The first connection element defines a cavity into which, when the cavity is empty, a second connection element can be inserted. The second connection element, which may be connected to a source of electrical power, is partially within the cavity, makes physical and electrical contact with the first connection element, and protrudes from the cavity. Such devices can be made in a continuous process by a method of the invention. They are particularly suitable for insertion into a circuit board.

Circuit protection systems which comprise a PTC resistor and a second resistor, e.g. a thick film resistor, which is thermally and electrically connected to the PTC resistor have a break current I.sub.B and a hold current I.sub.H such that the ratio I.sub.B /I.sub.H is at most 20. Suitable PTC resistors are conductive polymer devices which comprise a PTC element which has been radiation crosslinked under conditions such that the average dose rate is at most 3.0 Mrad/minute or during which no part of the PTC element which is in contact with the electrodes reaches a temperature greater than (T.sub.m -60).degree.C., where T.sub.m is the melting point of the polymeric component of the conductive polymer.

Circuit protection devices which comprise a PTC conductive polymer element and a second electrical component which is thermally coupled to the PTC element and which, when a fault causes the current in the circuit to become excessive, generates heat which is transferred to the PTC element, thus reducing the time taken to 'trip' the PTC element. The second component is for example a voltage-dependent resistor which is connected in series with the PTC element under the fault conditions and is thus protected from damage. Alternatively, the second component is a thick film resistor which is connected in series with the PTC element.
