Disclosed is a plastic-clad optical fiber (PCF) comprising a quartz core and a polymer clad as tightly formed around the core, in which the clad has a multi-layered structure of a plurality of different polymers, and the refractive index of the core (n,), that of the first clad as tightly formed around the core (n,) and that of the second clad as tightly formed over the first clad (n,) satisfy both 0.21 &lE;(n,&minus;n,)&lE;0.35 and n,<n,. This is a wide-band PCF which exhibits reduced loss in connection with crimp-style connectors, reduced bending loss, and lower transmission loss with temperature changes. Therefore, this PCF is useful as a light information-transmitting material in constructing ATM-LAN, high-speed Ethernet, etc.

The present invention provides a curable composition for use in optical fiber cladding comprising 48.8.about.92.9 wt % of 2-(perfluorooctyl) ethyl acrylate (I), 1.3.about.23.8 wt % of 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoroproprylacrylate (II), 5.0.about.30.0 wt % of trimethylolpropane triacrylate (III), and 0.1.about.5.0 wt % of photopolymerization initiator (IV), wherein the weight ratio [(I)/(II)] of monomer (I) and monomer (II) is within a range of from 75/25 to 98/2, and an optical fiber having cladding formed by the hardening of this curable composition and a core comprising quartz.

An optical fiber of a sheath-core structure is disclosed. The fiber has for its core a copolymer which includes an aliphatic N-substituted maleimide as a monomer unit, and preferably methyl methacrylate as an additional monomer unit. These optical fibers have high light transmittance, good mechanical characteristics and an excellent heat-resisting durability.
