A separator for a valve regulated lead-acid battery which comprises a paper sheet where very fine glass fiber is a main component, which has a piercing strength (puncture strength) of 4.5 N/mm or more and a tensile strength of 7.0 N/10 mmor more. The paper sheet is made by blending 80 to 90% by weight of glass fiber having 1.5 &#x3bc;m or less average fiber size, 5 to 10% by weight of single-material monofilament-form thermally non-adhesive organic fiber (non-heat-bondable organic fiber) and 5 to 10% by weight of single-material monofilament-form thermally adhesive organic fiber (heat-bondable organic fiber) comprising the same kind of material as in the thermally non-adhesive organic fiber in a wet papermaking process whereupon the fiber materials are bonded each other by thermal fusion of the thermally adhesive organic fiber whereby a coat (film) by melting of the organic fiber is not substantially formed on the surface of the glass fiber.

An object of the present invention is to provide a glass fiber package where a glass fiber aggregate which contains alkali-containing glass wool fiber of a very small diameter having an average fiber size of 5 &#x3bc;m or less or, particularly, less than 1 &#x3bc;m and containing 5% or more by weight or, particularly, 10% or more by weight of alkali metal oxide components is packed in a compressed state to give a form which is able to be handled as a freight, and in which, fiber breakage (lowering in the fiber length) and fiber adhesion caused by compression packing is hardly resulted even upon a long-term storage whereby the properties inherent to the glass fiber immediately after its manufacture is apt to be maintained; to provide a method for packing the glass fiber; and to provide a glass fiber product using the same. A glass fiber package of the present invention includes a glass fiber aggregate which contains alkali-containing glass wool fiber having an average fiber size of 5 &#x3bc;m or less and containing 5% or more by weight of alkali metal oxide components is packed in a compressed state so as to give a form which is able to be handled as a freight where the bulk density is 80 to 135 kg/m.

Glass fiber package, method for packing of glass fiber and glass fiber product using the same

This invention provides an inorganic fiber paper that consists essentially of inorganic materials and has a basis weight of less than 100 g/mand has been mainly produced by a wet sheet making method. The inorganic fiber paper comprises inorganic fibers and an inorganic binder as materials, wherein the inorganic fibers have been bound to each other with the inorganic binder. In the inorganic fiber paper, the content of impurities during wet sheet making is low, the water resistance and flexibility are good, and satisfactory strength and high porosity can be realized. The inorganic fiber paper is produced from a material comprising 60 to 97% by mass of inorganic fibers having an average fiber diameter of not more than 5 &#x3bc;m and 3 to 40% by mass of an inorganic binder composed mainly of a silica-based flaky inorganic material that has a hydroxyl group content per specific surface area of not less than 20 &#x3bc;mol/mas measured by a BET method, an average particle diameter of not more than 2 &#x3bc;m as measured by a laser scattering method and an aspect ratio of not less than 10.

Inorganic fiber paper

A separator for a valve regulated lead acid battery is composed mainly of fine glass fibers and also contains inorganic powder, beaten natural pulp, and heat-weldable organic fibers. The heat-weldable organic fibers have a fineness of 1.5 d (deniers) or less and a fiber length of 1 mm or more, and the amount of the heat-weldable organic fibers is from 3% to 15% by weight. A valve regulated lead acid battery employs the separator.
