A process for preparing a solid material containing coal ash includes a first step of mixing coal ash with a calcium compound to obtain a mixture, a second step of molding the mixture to obtain a molded article, and a third step of subjecting the molded article obtained in the second step to a hydrothermal treatment at a temperature of at least 120.degree. C. under high pressure. In the first step, 40 to 95 parts by weight of the coal ash is mixed with 60 to 5 parts by weight of the calcium compound, and the coal ash to be used has a bulk density of at least 0.8 g/cm.sup.3, an average particle diameter of 5 to 40 .mu.m and an aluminum content of 35% by weight or less in terms of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3. By the use of a blowing agent or the like, it is also possible to obtain a porous lightweight solid. As a consequence, there can be obtained a solid containing coal ash and having a high mixing ratio of coal ash, excellent dimensional stability to water, high strength and a decreased unevenness of the strength, and this kind of solid can be used in applications such as building materials, construction materials, artificial aggregates and the like. Furthermore, a laminated solid having not only the above-mentioned characteristics but also weight reduction properties can also be obtained, and this solid can be used to form building materials such as panels, blocks, bricks and boards for accoustic use, artificial lightweight aggregates and the like.

Process for preparing solidified material containing coal ash

In a composite sealing material having an inner portion and a carbon outer portion, a bulk density of the carbon outer portion is set in a range of 0.3.about.2.0 g/cm.sup.3, preferably in a range of 0.5.about.1.5 g/cm.sup.3, or fiber members are mixed in the carbon outer portion, or an oil layer is arranged on the carbon outer portion, or an organic layer or an inorganic layer is arranged on the carbon outer portion, so as to improve sealing properties of sealing members formed by using the composite sealing materials.

A power generating device in which a plurality of cylindrical solid oxide fuel cell elements are electrically connected to each other to constitute a collecting cell which is provided in a power generating chamber. The device is arranged such that a fuel gas is supplied on the surface of each solid oxide fuel cell element in the power generating chamber in an evenly distributed manner in order to reduce a temperature gradient due to a fuel concentration gradient in the chamber. Cracks are prevented in the solid oxide, unevenness of an electrochemical reaction in the power generating chamber becomes small, and the power generating efficiency is improved.

An air electrode as a component of a solid electrolyte fuel cell. The air electrode is composed of a first layer and a second layer. The first layer has an open porosity of 25% to 57%, pore diameters of 2.5 .mu.m to 12 .mu.m and a resistivity of less than 0.22 .OMEGA.cm. The second layer has an open porosity of 8% to 24%, pore diameters of 0.2 .mu.m to 3 .mu.m, and a ratio of the thickness of the second layer to the thickness of the air electrode is 2% to 28%. The sum of the thicknesses of the first and second layers is 0.7 mm to 3.0 mm. The materials of the first and second layers have perovskite structures selected from the group consisting of lanthanum manganate, calcium manganate, lanthanum nickelate, lanthanum cobalate and lanthanum chromate. A solid electrolyte fuel cell includes the air electrode as described above, a solid electrolyte film formed on the surface of the second layer of the air electrode and a fuel electrode film formed on the surface of the solid electrolyte film.

An optical fiber composite insulator which includes an insulator body having a through-hole formed in its axis portion and at least one optical fiber extending through the through-hole and sealed in the through-hole by an inorganic vitreous sealing material at both end portions of the through-hole. The sealing material has substantially the same thermal expansion coefficient as that of the insulator body, has high resistances against breakage in the power frequency voltage test and in the lightning impulse voltage test, against crack formation in the cooling and heating test, heat proof test and heat cycle test, and against the light-transmission loss.

Method for producing an optical fiber composite insulator

An optical fiber composite insulator including a hollow insulator body having an axial through-hole and at least one optical fiber extended through the through-hole and hermetically sealed to the inner surface of the through-hole by a sealing material. A relationship between a condition of the inner surface of the through-hole and the sealing material, a relationship between the inner diameters of the through-hole and the outer diameter of the hollow insulator body or a coating material on the optical fiber are selected to provide high insulating property, mechanical strength and airtight property of the optical fiber composite insulator.
