An information recording, reproducing apparatus comprising a first operation switch, a memory for storing a plurality of operation modes with operation steps for controlling the information recording, reproducing operation with the instructions from the control apparatus, a selecting apparatus for selecting a selecting mode, and a switching apparatus for selecting one operation mode from among the plurality of operation modes, where selection of an operation mode among from the plurality of operation modes is performed after a selection mode has been selected.

An information recording reproducing apparatus is operable with a large-capacity recording medium and is operatively connected to a host computer. The apparatus has a cache memory for temporarily storing therein information transmitted from the host computer, and also has a write-back function and a write-through function. When recording using a write-back function designated by a recording designation flag, the maximum number of substitutions of defective sectors is automatically set to a given value for a write-back operation, and a mode display indicates that a write-back mode has been selected. The write-back operation is inhibited by a write-back inhibit flag according to the frequency of occurrence of the substitutions or the condition of a substitute area to thereby enhance the reliability of recording information.

An information recording/reproducing apparatus for recording and reproducing information on and from a recording medium having thereon spiral or coaxial tracks and rotatable by a rotating device. The information recording/reproducing apparatus comprises a memory for temporarily storing the information, and a recording/reproducing drive unit coupled to the memory for recording and reproducing the information stored in the memory means on the recording medium. Also included in the apparatus is a control unit coupled to the memory and further the recording/reproducing drive unit for controlling the recording of the information on the recording medium on the basis of the data stored in the memory and the reproduction of the information therefrom to verify the recorded information. The control unit divides data, which is the information to be recorded, into two or more blocks and varies the length of the data to divided in accordance with the number of sectors in each of the tracks formed on the said recording medium.
