A condition information acquisition section of an image generation device acquires a condition of communication and condition information of a head-mounted display. An image generation section generates a display image including distorted images for a left eye and a right eye. A reduction processing section converts the display image to data in which different regions have different reduction ratios in accordance with the condition of communication, etc., and transmits the data through an output section. An image size restoration section of the head-mounted display restores the transmitted data to the display image in an original size to cause the display image to be displayed by a display section.

Image display system and image display method

A state information acquisition section of an image generation apparatus acquires state information of the head of a user. An image generation section generates a display image corresponding to a visual field. A down-sampling section down-samples image data and transmits the down-sampled image data from a transmission section. Methods and apparatus provide for: performing information processing on the basis of data received from a device that detects a user position; generating an image to be displayed as a result of the information processing; and determining that the user needs to be warned when the user position indicates that the user moves out of a play area set in an object space in reference to a detection field of the device, and to cause the image generating section to superpose a warning image on the image to be displayed, where the determining includes setting positions of boundary surfaces of the play area with respect to the detection field of the device within a predetermined range from the user.

Methods and apparatus provide for acquiring position information about a head-mounted display; performing information processing using the position information about the head-mounted display; generating and outputting data of an image to be displayed as a result of the information processing; and generating and outputting data of an image of a user guide indicating position information about a user in a real space using the position information about the head-mounted display, where the generating and outputting data of the image of the user guide includes determining whether to display the user guide in response to one of: (i) a user operation, and (ii) regardless of the user operation.

As a user guide, the state of overlooking a real space including an imaging device and a user is presented by one of two images: an image in reference to the position of the imaging device, or an image in reference to the user's direction. In both images, a rectangle indicative of the imaging device and a circle representative of the user are presented in a manner reflecting the actual positional relations and directions involved. Also presented are an area denoting a play area in the horizontal direction determined by a camera angle of view for example, and an arrow pointing to the direction in which the user is to move.

Methods and apparatus provide for: performing information processing on the basis of data received from a device that detects a target object; generating an image to be displayed as a result of the information processing; determining that a user needs to be warned when the target object moves out of a play area set in an object space in reference to a detection field of the device, the determining including causing the generating to superpose a warning image on the image to be displayed; and transmitting data of the image generated by the image generating section to a display device, where the determining includes setting positions of boundary surfaces of the play area with respect to boundary surfaces of the field of the device within a predetermined range from the user.

An information processing device causes an information processing section to perform information processing of a game for example, based on a user's operation received by an input information acquiring section and on images acquired by a stereo camera and obtained through an acquired image obtaining section. The information processing device causes an output data generating section to output the result of the information processing to a display device. At this point, a tracking processing section detects corresponding marker images from stereoscopic images and, based on a parallax therebetween, obtains position information about a target object. In accordance with vertical position misalignment between the detected marker images, a calibration determining section determines whether camera calibration is needed and requests the output data generating section to notify the user of the determined need.

A replay data acquisition section acquires replay data for reproducing a play status of a game. A replay image generation section generates a replay image of a game scene on the basis of the acquired replay data. A user determination section determines a user to be included in a combined image. A user image acquisition section acquires a user image obtained by imaging the determined user. A combination processing section generates the combined image by combining the acquired user image with the replay image.

In a real space that includes a user, predetermined rules are used to set boundary surfaces of a play area in reference to boundary surfaces of the field of view of an imaging device. If the user gets out of the play area, a warning state determining section determines that there is a need for a warning and superposes a warning image on a display image. A direction in the real space or the state therein, for example, is used to determine whether or not margin areas are to be set between the boundary surfaces of the play area and the boundary surfaces of the field of view, or how wide the margin areas are to be.

When a device is started up in the first time, for example, an initial image and various kinds of information are displayed and setting inputs are received. In parallel with the above, a photographed image is acquired and calibration is performed. At this time, first, if there is no need for measures by a user such as a direction of a camera is corrected, the calibration is performed. If the measures by the user are needed or the calibration is ended unsuccessfully, the stage number n is advanced by one, and the calibration is repeated while presenting information on the measures in the order of a low burden on the user.

Information processing device and position information acquisition method

In an information processing apparatus, a posture data acquiring section acquires output values from a motion sensor of a head-mounted display. Effective rates of acceleration are then obtained by correcting the output values based on correction formulas. A posture is calculated in reference to the axes of the motion sensor based on the acquired rates of acceleration. Thereafter, the posture of the head-mounted display is calculated by performing rotation correction based on previously acquired angle errors, the calculated posture being output to an information processing section. A correction data updating section acquires posture information based on markers of the head-mounted display imaged in a captured image, and updates correction data for use in acquiring the posture from the sensor output values through comparison with the marker-based posture information.
