A transmitting party adds reproduction time information to each transport packet to form an extended transport packet, encapsulates the extended transport packet, adds capsule counter information, and transmits the capsule. A receiving party has a storage means, and transmits a re-send request including the capsule count information to the transmitting party when a packet loss occurs. At the receiving party, the re-sent data received overwrites data in its original storage region. At reproduction, the receiving party decodes the data after compensating for jitter referring to reproduction time information. Accordingly, a packet loss or jitter is compensated for at both transmitting and receiving parties in a communications network such as the Internet so as to prevent the occurrence of a decoding error at the receiving party.

Content receiver and content transmitter

In a recording/reproducing system RRS, an I-picture detecting sectiongenerates, from a transport stream DETS output from a descrambler, a control signal CS indicating a bit location of a TS packet including a part of an I picture for output. Based on the control signal CS, a TS header processing sectionspecifies a TS header added to a payload of an I picture from the transport stream TS, and changes a value of a reserved bit in the TS header from 0 to 1. In high-speed replay, a storage unit SUrefers to the reserved bit of the TS header to select only an I-picture transport packet required for high-speed replay, and composes a transport stream PRTS for transmission to a decode unit DU. Thus, high-speed replay can be easily achieved.

Even if the video stream (STv) is switched between the streams (IS, PS) of different frame rate, seamless playback can be carried out.

A video display unit according to the present invention is provided with a multipurpose arithmetic unit for generating display data by carrying out at least one operation within one period of the pixel clock and an instruction sequencer for describing as instructions the display data and the operational contents to be inputted to this, and by implementing the described instructions while synchronizing to the display clock, picture up/down scaling processes as well as a blending process with the OSD are realized. Thereby, it is not necessary to provide a dedicated circuit for each of required specifications such as in a conventional unit, and by rewriting instructions within the instruction sequencer, it is possible to cope with a plurality of display specifications.
