A transmitter () which transmits a predetermined amount of transfer data using an infrared ray includes: a controller () for transmitting an SNRM command to the other station without transmitting a station-search command (XID) for searching the other station, the SNRM command including parameters such as maximum transferable speed and maximum receivable data length of the transmitter (); and a transmission section (). Consequently, it is possible to shorten a time necessary for a connection between the transmitter and the receiver. This allows shortening a time from the start of communication to the end of the communication in transmitting information data.

A two-way transmission system of the present invention is arranged in such a manner that, when a host-side controller confirms the receipt of an IN packet from a USB host, the host-side controller transfers the IN packet to a function-side controller, and receives a DATA packet from the function side. The received DATA packet is temporarily stored in a FIFO. At the time of the receipt of the IN packet again, the host-side controller supplies, to the USB host, the DATA packet stored in the FIFO.

A transmitter/receiver apparatus has a status checker that checks whether a plurality of ports of different types are active or not and a reference table that holds, among the transmission delay values between the individual ports, the maximum values corresponding to different combinations of active ports. A value read out from the reference table according to the output signal of the status checker is assigned, as the transmission delay value of the transmitter/receiver apparatus, to a base register. This configuration permits efficient communication.

When the portable information terminal device is connected with the cradle, an optical interface is connected to an optical interface being connected to an external device so as to allow communications. A main function block having a control function to function when the portable information terminal device is not connected with the cradle, is connected to a main power source and the power interface so as to allow power to transfer. The optical interface is arranged so that power is supplied from only the power interface. In such arrangement, a terminal becomes more durable, because optical communication is performed. Further, only the external power source supplies power to the optical interface when the optical interface is connected with the cradle.
