A touch panel device is provided which, even in cases in which a plurality of GUI parts are arranged in a limited space, enables operation of a GUI part in which, unlike a physical button, it is hard to distinguish the boundary by touch, without operational error, using a finger with a very large contact area in comparison to a touch pen. A touch panel device includes a rectangular screen having a detection region which detects contact, and a control section for generating a control signal in response to the contact detected by the detection region. The detection region has a shape that is inclined with respect to a side edge of the rectangular screen. In cases in which a body-part used for the contact is a finger of a user; when the user uses the right hand, the detection region has a shape that is inclined to the left side with respect to the side edge of the rectangular screen; and when the user uses the left hand, the detection region has a shape that is inclined to the right side with respect to the side edge of the rectangular screen.

The present invention provides an apparatus, a controlling method, and a controlling program for appropriately moving a pointer to a selection position regardless of alignment and size of function selection area, and improving operability and certainty of function selection in a GUI. A non-linear video edit system has first, second and third play modes which are selectable at time of playing a video for an edit. In the first play mode (EP TRIM), it plays a first cut scene (scene A) before an edit point and plays a second cut scene (scene B) after the edit point according to a play list. If there is the second instruction (VIEW instruction) during the recording, it plays the same edit result of the disk ( ) again based on the renewed temporary play list to provide it to the monitor ( A) without interrupting the recording. On this occasion, it approves the user to change the play speed and stops advancing the play if the user try to play beyond the recorded point. Then, the user can confirm the recorded video portion without waiting the completion of the recording and without interrupting the recording even during the recording from the external VCR.
