A gas generating composition exhibiting good slag forming ability is provided. The gas generating composition includes a fuel ranging from 10 to 60% by mass, an oxidizing agent ranging from 10 to 70% by mass, and a cooling agent (other than iron oxide) ranging from 1 to 20% by mass. The cooling agent has a volume mean diameter (D50) of 10 to 70 &#x3bc;m and a volume mean diameter at cumulative of 10% (D10) of equal to or greater than 5 &#x3bc;m. The cooling agent acts to decrease the combustion temperature and improve slag forming ability.

There is provided a gas generating composition having a low combustion temperature and a high burning rate. The gas generating composition comprises fuel and an oxidizing agent, and as necessary a binder and additives, the gas generating composition comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of glycine and a derivative thereof as the fuel. A combination of glycine as the fuel, basic copper nitrate as the oxidizing agent, and carboxymethyl cellulose or a salt thereof as the binder is preferable.

The gas generating agent is for a gas generator for an airbag system that is installed at least outside a vehicle cabin and that protects an individual subjected to impact by the vehicle, and has a mass loss rate of not more than 1% after holding for 400 hours at 130&#xb0; C. in a sealed system. The gas generating agent preferably comprises fuel and oxidizing agent and the melting point of the fuel is preferably at least 250&#xb0; C.

A process for producing a basic metal nitrate, which comprises adding an aqueous solution of a metal nitrate or an aqueous solution of a mixture of a metal nitrate and a water-soluble additive and an alkali solution to a reaction vessel in which a reaction solvent whose pH at 20&#xb0; C. is adjusted to 6 or less is present, and conducting the reaction with stirring.

An air bag gas generator has a cylindrical member that permits reliable welding of the cylindrical member with an inner surface of a ceiling portion of a housing even if the welding surface is slightly misaligned. It furthermore permits welding in such a manner (a more stable manner) that unsteadiness does not occur in the area where the inner surface of the ceiling portion of the housing and the inner cylindrical member abuts. In the air bag gas generator, which includes the inner cylindrical member in the housing, the inner cylindrical member has a peripheral wall portion bent to form a flattened surface portion as an extension of the one of that cylindrical member where it joins the inner surface of the ceiling portion.
