A power converter, which comprises a resonant Switched Capacitor Converter (SCC) that consists of an input connected to an input voltage source, from which power is delivered to a load; a resonant tank circuit formed by a capacitor connected in series with an inductor and defining a resonant cycle; a first switch connected in series between a first contact of the input voltage source and a first contact of the resonant tank circuit; a second switch connected in series between the first contact of the resonant tank circuit and a first contact of the load; a conducting path connecting between a second contact of the input voltage source, a second contact of the resonant tank circuit and a second contact of the load and a third switch connected in parallel to the resonant tank circuit. The converter is adapted to charge the resonant tank circuit by controlling the first switch to start conducting at a first zero crossing point and allow current to flow from the input voltage source to the tank circuit during a first portion of the cycle; discharge the resonant tank circuit into the load by controlling the first switch to stop conducting and the second switch to start conducting, at a second zero crossing point to thereby allow current to flow from the tank circuit to the load during a second portion of the cycle, and reverse the voltage polarity on the capacitor by controlling the second switch to stop conducting and the third switch to start conducting at a third zero crossing point during the last portion of the cycle.

High efficiency resonant switched capacitor converter with continuous conversion ratio

A method for increasing the power extraction capability out of Differential Power Processor (DPP) system, which consists of a chain of N serially connected PV elements and an array of N&#x2212;1 gyrator-type converters which are current sourcing resonant Switched Capacitor Converters (SCCs), each of which being connected in parallel with two adjacent PV elements. Accordingly, local MPPT is continuously performed, by each gyrator-type converter, to one of its two connected PV elements by sinking or sourcing current to/from the neighboring PV element. Whenever a mismatch in the MPPs is detected, the gyrator-type converters are used to provide the difference in current that is required for each of the PV elements to operate at its MPP, such that the amount of power processed by each gyrator-type converter in the chain is linearly proportional to its location in the chain, with respect to the mismatched PV element.

Resonant switched-capacitor gyrator-type converter with local MPPT capability for PV cells

A method for constructing a direct-current to direct current (DC-DC) converter from an input voltage to an output voltage. The DC-DC converter has multiple capacitors and multiple switches connectible the capacitors. A target voltage ratio is obtained based on the input voltage and the output voltage. The target voltage is expressed as a radix number. The radix number is spawned into a code of the target voltage ratio. The code is translated into a switched-capacitor converter (SCC) configuration including the switches and the capacitors. The code may be an extended binary representation code or a Generic Fractional Numbers code. The switched-capacitor converter (SCC) configuration is preferably modified to obtain charge balance.

Self-adjusting switched-capacitor converter with multiple target voltages and target voltage ratios

An electronic circuit which provides an electrical incapacitation current to a living target. The circuit includes a high voltage power supply, a charge-storing capacitor connected by a high voltage lead to the high voltage power supply. The charge-storing capacitor stores a charge at high voltage as supplied by the high voltage power supply. The circuit further includes a switch, a step-up transformer including a primary coil a secondary coil, a resonant circuit and an output terminal serially connected through the secondary coil to the high voltage lead of the charge-storing capacitor. The primary coil is connected in parallel with the charge-storing capacitor through the switch. During the incapacitation, the output terminal is operatively attached to at least a part of the living target. When the switch is closed, the resonant circuit initially stores zero charge, and any gap if present between the output terminal and the living target undergoes electrical breakdown from energy stored in the charge-storing capacitor. After the electrical breakdown, the incapacitation current is provided substantially from the charge stored in the charge-storing capacitor.

Electronic circuitry for incapacitating a living target

Apparatus driven by high-frequency AC current source, for driving an electric load with low-frequency AC current, that comprises a current splitting inductor, for generating, from the high-frequency current source, a first and a second high-frequency AC current sources; a rectifier, coupled to the splitting inductor, consisting of rectifying diodes for rectifying the first and second high-frequency current sources, and capacitors, charged by the diodes, the capacitors being corresponding to the first and second DC current sources; a controllable half-bridge commutator having a first and a second control inputs, the commutator being coupled to the DC current sources, for commutating the DC current sources, for allowing to generate, from the DC current sources, the low-frequency AC current required for driving the electric load; and a control circuitry, having a first and a second outputs, the outputs being coupled to the first and second control inputs, respectively, and outputting two complimentary pulse trains, each of which having a frequency being automatically adjusted according to the operating conditions of the electric load, for controlling the switching time of the commutator, thereby causing the commutator to alternately change the direction of the current passing through the electric load.

Low frequency inverter fed by a high frequency AC current source

A high frequency AC current-sourcing driving that can feed electrical loads with a constant current that is independent of load resistance. The driver is a self-oscillating inverter that includes a resonant network comprising a resonant capacitor and a resonant inductor. A current comparing and toggling circuit (CCTC) is used to generate the control signals of the inverter's power switches. Also included in the system is a DC blocking capacitor that prevents the DC voltage from reaching the resonant network.

Self-oscillating constant-current gas discharge device lamp driver and method

A micromotor comprising: a piezoelectric element including a common electrode and a plurality of other electrodes formed thereon and including at least a first a and a second electrode group, each group including at least one electrode, wherein the piezoelectric element causes motion in a first direction when a voltage is applied between the first electrode group and the common electrode, and wherein the piezoelectric element causes motion in a second direction when a voltage is applied between the second electrode group and the common electrode; a voltage source that electrifies the common electrode; and at least two switches separately connected between the first and second electrode groups and a low voltage, said switches being activatable to connect one of said first and second electrode groups to the low voltage to cause selective motion in the first or second directions.

An Active Power Factor Correction (APFC) apparatus having improved output voltage regulation, for switching a power supply fed by an array of rectifying diodes and consisting of at least an input inductor, a contact of which is connected in series with a contact of the array, and of a controllable power switch connected in tandem with the array and the input inductor, that comprises a) sampling circuitry, for sampling the instantaneous value of the output voltage; b) control circuitry, for controlling the switching time of the controllable switch in response to an error signal, and, thereby, causing the instantaneous value to be essentially similar to a predetermined nominal value; c) amplifier circuitry, for generating the error signal, the amplifier circuitry having at least a reference input connected to a reference signal, being determined according to the nominal value and sampling circuitry, and an input, to which an input signal is provided, the error signal represents the deviation of the input signal from the reference signal, the input signal being associated with the sampled instantaneous value; and d) circuitry for providing a low-pass filtered first indication signal to the input, whenever the deviation, of the output signal, of the sampling circuitry, from the reference signal, does not exceed a predetermined value, or otherwise, for providing a second indication signal to the amplifier circuitry whenever the deviation exceeds the predetermined value, the second indication signal being related to higher deviation values.

Method and voltage feedback circuitry for improving the performance of APFC converters

A method for reducing the harmonics contents of an input current drawn from a power line into an electrical system without sensing an input voltage, the method comprising providing an active power factor correction controller with a switch module having a main switch and a timing device, wherein the main switch has an on-time correlated with an on-duty cycle duration, and an off-time correlated with an off-duty cycle duration, and maintaining a linear relationship between the off-duty cycle duration and the input current by using the timing device; and an apparatus for active power factor correction with minimum input current distortion, comprising an active power factor correction assembly that includes a main switch and a timing device, wherein the main switch has associated therewith an on-time correlated with an on-duty cycle duration, and an off-time correlated with an off-duty cycle duration, and wherein the timing device generates the mentioned on-time and off-time, and linearization means for maintaining a linear relation between the off-duty cycle duration and the input current.

Method and apparatus for active power factor correction with minimum input current distortion

Power factor correction apparatus, for a switching power supply fed by an array of rectifying diodes and consisting of at least an input inductor, a contact of which is connected in series with a contact of the array, and of a power switch connected between the other contact of the array and the other contact of the input inductor that comprises circuitry for identifying, in each cycle determined by the switching frequency of the power supply, whenever the instantaneous value of the current through the inductor reaches a minimal value; circuitry for switching the power switch to its conducting state in response to the minimal current through the inductor; circuitry for reflecting the current flowing through the inductor by a measurable or simulated parameter; and circuitry for providing indication, in each cycle, by using the parameter, the indication being related to the timing until the peak value of the current, that corresponds to a specific load, has been essentially reached, or to the time from the moment that the current reaches the minimal value until the timing, and for switching the power switch to its non-conducting state in response to the indication.

PFC apparatus for a converter operating in the borderline conduction mode

Modular apparatus for regulating the harmonics of current drawn from power lines by electric equipment, comprising a first rectifier circuit module, consisting of an array of rectifying diodes; a second Switch and Controller Assembly (SCA) module, which comprises a power switch and controller and their interconnections; an input inductor for filtering the current drawn from the rectifier module; and an output capacitor, for filtering the output voltage ripple at the load. The inlet of the rectifier is connected to the power line and an outlet of the rectifier module is connected to the SCA. The inlet of said SCA is connected to the rectifier, via an inductor and the outlet of said SCA is connected to the output capacitor. The inlet of the inductor is connected to the rectifier, the outlet of the inductor is connected to the inlet of said SCA, and the capacitor is connected in parallel with the load.
