A method in a communication system, in which multiple transmitters transmit respective control messages to a receiver over a control channel, includes allocating respective resources of the control channel to the control messages so as to cause a respective likelihood of interference between a control message and at least one other control message to be inversely related to a respective impact of the interference between the control message and the at least one other control message on an overall performance measure defined for the communication system, by allocating a dedicated resource to a first control message for which the interference has a high impact on the overall performance measure, and allocating a shared resource to a second control message for which the interference has a low impact on the overall performance measure. The control messages are transmitted from the transmitters over the control channel using the allocated resources.

Methods and systems for control-channel resource allocation in multi-user communication systems

A method for communication includes receiving at a receiver from a group of two or more transmitters multiple Radio Frequency (RF) transmission beams that alternate in time and space and include at least first and second transmission beams. The method identifies that the first transmission beam causes interference to reception of the second transmission beam. Feedback is sent from the receiver to one or more of the transmitters, so as to cause the transmitters to attenuate the first transmission beam during transmission of the second transmission beam.

Multi-point opportunistic beamforming with selective beam attenuation

A pilot acquisition unit for code division multiple access (CDMA) communication systems is provided which includes a fast Hadamard transform (FHT) unit and a pre-Hadamard processing unit. The FHT unit determines the quality, in accordance with a metric, of each of a set of possible pseudo-random number (PN) loadings and the pre-Hadamard processing unit generates a vector u per set of PN loadings. The vector u defines a quality metric of a received pilot signal with the set of possible PN loadings, the pre-Hadamard processing unit providing the vector u to the FHT unit.

Method and device for managing power consumption of a receiver in stand-by mode

A device for power management of a receiver includes a soft decoder and a power reducer. The receiver receives repetitions of a word containing a message possibly addressed to the receiver. The soft decoder soft decodes at least one of the repetitions to produce a codeword, and the power reducer reduces power to the receiver when the message contained in the codeword is not addressed to the receiver. The receiver may be a mobile telephone, a wireless local loop, a pager, or a cordless telephone. A method for managing power in a receiver includes the steps of receiving a repetition of a word containing a message possibly addressed to the receiver and combining the repetition with previous repetitions of the word. Candidates are generated from information contained in the combination, and a best candidate is selected from the generated candidates. The probable reliability of the best candidate is determined. If the best candidate is probably reliable and the message contained therein is not addressed to the receiver, power to the receiver is reduced. If the best candidate is probably not reliable, all of the steps are repeated until either the best candidate is probably reliable or no further repetitions of the word are received.

In a receiver receiving a signal, the signal including data which is at least modulated by a cyclic sequence, a method for operating the receiver, the method including the steps of receiving a portion of the signal, the portion being modulated by a predetermined section of the cyclic sequence, receiving an additional portion of the signal, the additional portion being modulated by the predetermined section of the cyclic sequence, jointly processing the portion and the additional portion and producing a set of receiver parameters, the receiver parameters minimizing a predetermined cost function for the predetermined section of the cyclic sequence.
