A predoping technique considered as highly practicable is an electrochemical method in which predoping is performed by assembling a battery such that an active material (electrode) and lithium are brought into direct contact with each other or short-circuited therebetween via an electric circuit, and by filling an electrolytic solution in the battery. However, in this case, much time is required, and there are problems such as the handling and the thickness accuracy of an extremely thin lithium metal foil that is not greater than 30 &#x3bc;m thick. By mixing a lithium-dopable material and lithium metal together in the presence of a solvent, such problems can be solved.

Disclosed is a method for producing a porous carbon material comprising: heating a cured phenolic resin complex lump, including 150 to 450 parts by weight of sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide per 100 parts by weight of phenolic resin, at a temperature of 420 to 850&#xb0; C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to obtain carbonized material; and washing and removing sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide included in the carbonized material. According to the present invention, there can be provided a porous carbon material, including large volumes of subnano-pores having a diameter of in a range of 0.45 to 1.0 nm with a sharp distribution, which is particularly useful as a gaseous adsorbent.

Porous carbon material and a method of production thereof

The invention provides a non-aqueous secondary battery having positive and negative electrodes and non-aqueous electrolyte containing lithium salt which has an energy capacity of 30 Wh or more, a volume energy density of 180 Wh/l or higher, which battery has a flat shape and is superior in heat radiation characteristic, used safely and particularly preferably used for a energy storage system. Non-aqueous secondary cell and method for controlling the same

Disclosed is an organic electrolytic cell comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a solution of lithium salt in an aprotic organic solvent as an electrolytic solution. A current collector of positive electrode and a current collector of negative are respectively provided with pores piercing from the front surface to the back surface, an active material of negative electrode is capable of reversibly carrying lithium, and lithium originating in the negative electrode is carried by electrochemical contact with lithium arranged to face the negative or positive electrode. An opposed area of said lithium is not more than 40% of an area of the negative electrode.

Organic electrolytic cell

An insoluble and infusible substrate with a polyacene-type skelatal structure having a hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio of from 0.05 to 0.60 and containing open pores having an average diameter of not more than 10 micrometers, said substrate being a heat-treated product of an aromatic condensation polymer consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The substrate, when doped with a dopant, gives an electrically conductive material. When having a specific surface area of at least 600 m.sup.2 /g, the substrate is especially useful as an electrode of an organic cell.

An insoluble and infusible substrate with a polyacene-type skeletal structure having a hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio of from 0.05 to 0.60 and a specific surface area, measured by the BET method, of at least 600 m.sup.2 /g, said substrate being a heat-treated product of a mixture comprising an aromatic condensation polymer consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen as a matrix and a fiber member selected from the group consisting of phenol resin fibers, heat-treated phenol resin fibers and carbon fibers dispersed therein. The substrate has excellent physical properties such as strength and is useful as an electrode for organic cell.

An insoluble and infusible substrate with a polyacene-type skeletal structure having a hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio of from 0.05 to 0.60 and a specific surface area, measured by the BET method, of at least 600 m.sup.2 /g, said substrate being a heat-treated product of an aromatic condensation polymer consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The substrate provides an electrically conductive organic polymeric material having a higher electrical conductivity than said non-doped substrate, when it is doped with an electron donating doping agent, or an electron accepting doping agent, or both. The substrate is useful as an electrode for organic cell.

An electrically conductive organic polymeric material is disclosed which comprises (a) an insoluble and infusible substrate with a polyacene-type skeletal structure having a hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio of from 0.60 to 0.15, said substrate being a heat-treated product of an aromatic condensation polymer consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and (b) an electron donating doping agent, or an electron accepting doping agent, or both; said material having a higher electrical conductivity than the undoped substrate (a). The electrically conductive organic polymeric material can be produced by a process which comprises heat-treating an aromatic condensation polymer consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in a non-oxidizing atmosphere by heating it to a temperature of 400.degree. to 800.degree. C. to form a substrate having a hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio of from 0.06 to 0.15, and then doping it with an electron donating doping agent, or an electron accepting doping agent, or a mixture of both, thereby making the electrical conductivity of the doped substrate higher than that of the substrate. The electrically conductive organic polymeric material exhibits excellent oxidation stability and has the electrical conductivity of a semiconductor or conductor.
