In some aspects, an electrically responsive device can include a composite structure having spatially modulated structural properties that includes a substrate material having a surface and defining a plane; an electrically responsive material layer formed over at least a portion of the surface of the substrate material; an electrode material over portions of the electrically responsive material; and a stiffening material disposed along the electrode material, where the stiffening material has a thickness that varies and has regions of increased thickness that correspond with the regions of the composite structure along which the electrode material is disposed. The spatially modulated structural properties can include the regions of the composite structure along which the electrode material is disposed having the increased material stiffness, exclusive of the electrode material, relative to regions of the composite structure that do not include the electrode material.

Electrically responsive device

The present invention concerns implantable ocular devices for the sustained release of medication to the eye, and methods for manufacturing and using such devices. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a device comprising: (a) a body comprising a matrix of a prostaglandin and a silicone; (b) a parylene coating on the outer surface of the body; and (c) one or more pores extending from the outer surface of the parylene coating to the outer surface of the body.

Punctal plugs and methods of delivering therapeutic agents

Microfabricated devices for operation in a fluid that include a substrate that has a first and second surface and a first electrode material layer located over the first surface of the substrate. The devices have a piezoelectric material layer located over the first electrode material layer and a second electrode material layer located over the piezoelectric material layer. The devices also include a layer of isolation material located over the second electrode material layer that at least one of chemically or electrically isolates a portion of the second electrode material layer from a fluid. Some devices include a layer of conductive material located over the layer of isolation material.

Microfabricated devices and method for fabricating microfabricated devices

A burner module for delivering a flow of chemical reactants to a combustion site of a chemical vapor deposition process includes a plurality of substantially planar layers. The substantially planar layers are arranged in a generally parallel and fixed relationship and define an inlet, an outlet and a passage fluidly connecting the inlet and outlet. At least one of the layers is a distribution layer having a plurality of apertures therethrough and fluidly communicating with the passage. The plurality of apertures collectively define a non-uniform pattern arranged and configured to improve the uniformity of a flow out through the outlet. Burner adapter and assembly embodiments are also included.
