Assigning CDMA channel codes in a multiple beam zone sector such that they may be reused within the same sector. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes configuring directional antennas in a cell sector to provide multiple beam zones in a cell sector and assigning channel codes for use within the beam zones such that each channel code is assigned for use in only one beam zone of any set of three consecutive beam zones in the cell sector. The reassignment is preferable conditioned upon the mobility status of the user. This effectively reduces the inter-user interference by ensuring at least two intervening beam zones are located between zones that are using the same channel codes, and that the second user is not mobile. The channel codes may be Walsh codes or quasi-orthogonal functions (QOFs).

A method and base transceiver station (BTS) for preventing paging channel overload in a wireless communication system. Paging channel occupancy level is measured and compared to different threshold levels. Each threshold level is associated with one or more types of paging messages. If the measured occupancy level of the paging channel reaches a first threshold level of occupancy, the BTS switches to a state in which the BTS allows initial transmission of paging messages of a first type but blocks retransmission of paging messages of the first type. If the measured occupancy level of the paging channel reaches a second threshold level of occupancy, the BTS switches to a second state in which the BTS allows initial transmission of paging messages of the first type and paging messages of a second type but blocks retransmission of paging messages of the first type and paging messages of the second type.

Method and apparatus for preventing paging channel overload

A wireless repeater for receiving, amplifying and transmitting one or more wireless signals. The repeater comprises a signal processing device for determining one or more attributes of a wireless signal received from a base transceiver station and a memory for storing a reference list that includes a list of one or more preferred frequency bandwidths to be received, amplified and transmitted. The repeater further comprises a controller coupled with the signal processing device for comparing the one or more attributes of the wireless signal from the base transceiver station with the reference list, where the controller selects a first active set of one or more frequency bandwidths from the preferred frequency bandwidths based on the comparison. The repeater still further includes a first reception filter, where the first reception filter, in response to control signal(s) from the controller, filters out signals, communicated to the first reception filter, that have frequencies outside the first active set of frequency bandwidths.

Radio frequency repeater with automated block/channel selection

A method and system for managing handoff of a cellular wireless data session between a first wireless coverage area and second wireless coverage area. A first radio network controller (RNC) predicts that handoff of the data session will soon be necessary. Radio resources for continuing the data session in the second wireless coverage area are reserved. The reserved radio resources may be controlled by the first RNC or by a second RNC. The first RNC sends, to a wireless communication device, a predictive handoff directive message that instructs the wireless communication device (i) to wait a designated period of time, and (ii) to then handoff the data session.

Method and system for predictive handoff of a data session between entities

A wireless repeater for receiving, amplifying and transmitting one or more wireless signals. The repeater comprises a signal processing device for determining one or more attributes of a wireless signal received from a mobile device and a memory for storing a reference list that includes one or more preferred frequency bandwidths to be repeated. A method and system for automatically providing to a network entity in a wireless network, a location of a mobile station where a call is dropped (i.e., a call-drop location). The mobile station or base station may determine that a call in which the mobile station was engaged has been dropped. In response to determining that a call has been dropped, the mobile station or base station may obtain the location of the mobile station. The call-drop location can be used to identify those areas of the wireless network needing improved radio coverage.

Method and system for facilitating determination of call-drop locations in a wireless network

A method and system of identifying cells in which to apply a carrier frequency. A wireless communication system may be comprised of cells, which are divided into sectors. A list of sectors of the system that require additional capacity may be compiled and a carrier frequency may be applied to a selected group of those sectors. The sectors may be selected based on a distance between each other and/or based on a probability of handoff from one another, for instance.

Method and system of identifying cells in which to apply a carrier frequency

A system and method are provided for using electronic serial numbers (ESNS) to determine whether to perform vocoder bypass. In an exemplary embodiment, a terminal device may share a common mobile identification number (MIN) with other terminal devices. The terminal device may answer a page and provide its ESN to an intermediate entity. The intermediate entity may query a database to determine whether the answering terminal device is a mobile station. The intermediate entity may perform vocoding if the answering terminal device is a non-mobile station, or vocoder bypass if the answering terminal device is a mobile station.
