A method includes introducing a fluoro-based small molecule tracer into a stimulation fluid, injecting the stimulation fluid into a target zone of a subterranean formation, and maintaining the fluoro-based small molecule tracer inside the target zone of the subterranean formation for an amount of time. While being maintained inside the target zone, the fluoro-based small molecule tracer comes into contact with water at a downhole temperature resulting in hydrolysis of the fluoro-based small molecule tracer to produce a fluorinated tracer and a nonfluorinated group. Then, produced fluid that includes the fluorinated tracer is recovered, a concentration of the fluorinated tracer in the hydrocarbons is determined, and the concentration of the fluorinated tracer is correlated to a productivity of the target zone of the subterranean formation.

Oil, gas and water well tracers with tunable release profile

A method for monitoring gas production in a subterranean formation includes introducing a polymer composite particle having a degradable portion and a non-degradable portion including a tracer into a stimulation fluid and injecting the stimulation fluid into the subterranean formation to a treatment stage of a treatment zone. The treatment stage has at least one opening that the polymer composite particle may flow into and remain inside. The polymer composite particle may be exposed to moisture at a downhole temperature while inside the at least one opening. The moisture may degrade the degradable portion of the polymer composite particle, thereby releasing the non-degradable portion including the tracer. Produced gas that includes the non-degradable portion including the tracer may be recovered from the subterranean formation and the tracer may be correlated to the treatment stage of the treatment zone of the subterranean formation.

Partially degradable particulates as time-released tracers for acidized and fractured gas wells

Described is a polymer-based well tracer. The polymer-based well tracer is a fluoropolymer having a fluorinated group. The fluoropolymer may be formed into a particle, a coating for proppant particulates, or encapsulated in a polymeric resin. Upon degradation or hydrolysis of the fluoropolymer, the fluorinated group having a fluorinated compound is released within the well.

Methods and systems including introducing a treatment fluid into a subterranean formation wellbore. The treatment fluid includes an aqueous base fluid; nitrogen-containing waste plastic; and carbon dioxide. The nitrogen-containing waste plastic is hydrolyzed in the aqueous base fluid under conditions in the subterranean formation wellbore, thereby forming hydrolysis reaction products. The hydrolysis reaction products and the carbon dioxide are reacted in the subterranean formation wellbore.

Degradable polymer additives are provided. The degradable polymer additives include a tracer functional group that is bonded to a base polymeric component by a hydrolysable covalent bond. The base polymeric component is a polysaccharide. The tracer functional group is selected from the group comprising a halogen-containing functional group, a substituted heterocyclic aromatic group, and combination thereof. A method utilizing the degradable polymeric additives in an altered drilling fluid is provided. Such a method includes introducing the altered drilling fluid into a wellbore and recovering an associated wellbore cutting from a depleted drilling fluid.

A method of surface logging a well includes adding each of multiple polymeric taggants to a circulating drilling fluid in an addition sequence while drilling the well. Each polymeric taggant includes a polymer and a respective fluorescent dye having an emission wavelength or excitation wavelength different from that of each other fluorescent dye. The method includes taking a sample of drill cuttings carried by a drilling fluid while drilling a well, wherein the sample of drill cuttings includes polymeric taggants attached to the drill cuttings. The method includes extracting the dyes from the sample of drill cuttings into an extract solution; determining an indication of the type of and the concentration of each of the dyes in the extract solution; and determining a depth associated with the sample of drill cuttings based on the indication of the concentration of each of the dyes and on the addition sequence.

Methods may include introducing a polymerizable composition containing a polycyclic monomer and a catalyst into a subterranean formation; and polymerizing the polymerizable composition in the presence of the catalyst in situ to form a polymer. Methods may also include lowering a wellbore tool into the subterranean formation, wherein the tool contains a first partition containing a polymerizable composition, and a second partition containing a catalyst; releasing the polymerizable composition from the first partition; releasing the catalyst from the second partition; contacting the polymerizable composition and the catalyst in a mixing region; and reacting the polymerizable composition and the catalyst in situ to form a polymer.

Methods for in situ formation of high glass transition temperature polymers

A method for depth determination of drilled rock cuttings is disclosed. The taggant is injected and transported downhole along the mud stream and attaches to the rock cuttings. Taggant impregnated cuttings are detected at the surface based on molecular weight, emission wavelengths or radio frequency characteristics for encoding the taggant. The identification code identifies the depth of the drill bit when the particular batch of the taggant is released into the mud. The detection data, in addition to mud properties, flow rates, drill volume and penetration rates, formation characteristics, and well specifications are transferred to and analyzed by a taggant analysis and control engine. The taggant analysis and control engine controls an IoT controller that adapts the parameters of the taggant injection pump to achieve an intelligent controlled release to optimize the depth characterization process.

Embodiments may generally take the form of a degradable composite structure and a method for controlling the rate of degradation of a degradable composite structure. An example embodiment may take the form of a degradable polymer matrix composite (PMC) including a matrix having: a degradable polymer, a fiber reinforcement, and particulate fillers. The fiber loading is between approximately 10% to 70% by weight and the particulate loading is between approximately 5% to 60%.
