A method, system, computer system, and computer-readable medium that enable a secondary host that is not the file system host to create a backup of a clone file set that shares at least one data block on a storage device with an active file set. Start and end locations are identified for a set of contiguous storage locations (referred to as a 'chunk') on the storage device. Physical location information is obtained for each portion of a file contained in the chunk. The start and end locations and physical location information for portions of files contained in the chunk are provided to the secondary host, which sequentially reads data from the set of contiguous storage locations and constructs a copy of the file(s) making up the clone file set. The file(s) are written by the secondary host to a storage device to create a backup of the clone file set.

A method and system for mirror storage element resynchronization in a storage virtualization device is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a read operation on a region of a data volume is received at a first module of a first storage virtualization device where the data volume is associated with at least a first mirror storage element and a second mirror storage element, a state indicated by a bit corresponding to the region of the data volume within a first synchronization map is determined in response to receiving the read operation, the read operation is processed using the first module if the bit is determined to indicate a first state and using a second module of the first storage virtualization device if the bit is determined to indicate a second state.

A system for distributed discovery and management of frozen images includes a first and a second computer host, a first and a second frozen image agent and a frozen image server. Each of the first and second frozen image agents may be configured to identify one or more storage hierarchies hosted at a respective computer host, and to provide an encoding representing the identified storage hierarchies to the frozen image server. The frozen image server may be configured to aggregate the encodings provided by the frozen image agents into a system-level storage hierarchy catalog.
