A method for purifying an exhaust gas containing an excess amount of oxygen, to remove nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons therefrom, by bringing a catalyst into contact with the exhaust gas, the catalyst comprising a zeolite ion-exchanged with (a) cobalt or (b) both cobalt and at least one metal selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth metals and rare earth metals, the zeolite being selected from the group consisting of ferrierite, ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZSM-12 and ZSM-20, and having a silica-to-alumina molar ratio of from 15 to 1,000.

Method of purifying oxygen-excess exhaust gas

A method for the catalytic purification of an oxygen-rich exhaust gas, wherein the catalyst comprises: a catalyst support, a zeolyte layer formed on the catalyst support and noble metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium loaded on the catalyst. The exhaust gas purifying catalyst and the exhaust gas purifying process employing the same purify the nitrogen oxides (NOx) by facilitating the reaction between hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) contained in the exhaust gases more preferentially than the reaction between hydrocarbons (HC) and oxygen (O.sub.2) contained therein, thereby purifying the nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbons (HC) at high efficiency.

Exhaust gas purifying catalyst and exhaust gas purifying process

The exhaust gases, such as of an internal combustion engine are contacted with a catalyst containing copper in the presence of hydrocarbons in an oxidizing atmosphere, whereby nitrogen oxides are reduced from the exhaust gases. Then, the exhaust gases are preferably contacted with an oxidizing catalyst. The former catalyst contains copper loaded on a porous support formed from alumina, silica, silica-alumina or zeolite or mixture thereof. The support is preferably a monolithic body having a first portion loaded with copper and a second portion loaded with a metal or metals defining the oxidizing catalyst.

Method of purifying exhaust gases

A catalyst for synthesizing hydrocarbons such as butane etc. by hydrogenation of carbon monoxide, which comprises cobalt and cerium oxide as catalytic components supported on a conventional porous material, or cobalt as a catalytic component and cerium oxide as a support thereof. A self-heating type ignition plug according to the present invention includes a base portion having a fixing portion formed on an outer wall thereof and a terminal insulately provided therein and connected to an electrical source; an ignition means, integrally connected to the base portion, having an ignition surface formed on a wall surface thereof and composed of a catalyst comprising a transition material, thereby to come in contact with the fuel; and a heating means having a resistive exothermic element connected to the terminal of the base portion, the resistive exothermic element being provided adjacent to the ignition surface within the ignition means, whereby the fuel may be ignited and burned as a whole by the ignition surface of the catalyst which is maintained to a preset temperature due to the oxidation reaction of the catalyst and the fuel being in contact therewith after the heating means is deenergized.

A catalyst for removing nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon impurities from exhaust gases comprising a porous carrier consisting essentially of alumina-magnesia spinel; and a metal supported thereon selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium and mixtures thereof.
