In a radiation detector in which scintillator layers are directly formed on all the light receiving parts of a plurality of photoelectric conversion substrates, space and level difference between the adjacent photoelectric conversion substrates are determined so that the effects of these space and level difference fall within a range corresponding to the effect of one photoelectric conversion element. Specifically, the space between the adjacent photoelectric conversion substrates is equal to or less than 133 &#x3bc;m and the level difference between the adjacent photoelectric conversion substrates is equal to or less than 100 &#x3bc;m. Accordingly, the scintillator layers can be directly formed on all the light receiving parts of the plurality of photoelectric conversion substrates. This prevents degradation in MTF and sensitivity and reduces manufacturing costs.

Radiation detector

An X-ray light emitting phosphor film () such as a CsI film that converts an X-ray to light is formed on an input substrate () constituting an input part of an X-ray image detector. A surface portion of the X-ray light emitting phosphor film () is irradiated with high-energy light having a wavelength of 500 nm or less. The surface portion of the X-ray light emitting phosphor film () is locally sublimated and/or fused to be flattened by the irradiation with the high-energy light. The use of the high-energy light such as a laser beam makes it possible to efficiently and uniformly flatten the surface portion of the X-ray light emitting phosphor film.

An X-ray image intensifier that includes a vacuum envelope having a metal X-ray input window and an input screen formed on the inner surface of the X-ray input window, a focusing electrode, an anode, and an output screen arranged in the vacuum envelope along the traveling direction of electrons generated from the input screen. The X-ray input window has a rough, surface-hardened layer on the side on which the input screen is formed. The input screen includes a phosphor layer adjacent to the rough, surface-hardened layer and a photocathode formed on the phosphor layer.

X-ray image intensifier

An X-ray image intensifier incorporates a pair of opposed electrodes and an ion pump within a vacuum vessel. The ion pump supplies a magnetic field to a space between the opposed electrodes. At least one of the opposed electrodes is connected to focusing electrodes in the vacuum vessel. With this structure, the vacuum vessel can be maintained in a high vacuum for a long period of time.
