An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine has an exhaust passage switching device for switching an exhaust gas flow path, an HC adsorbent material disposed within the main exhaust passage for adsorbing and releasing unburned constituents in exhaust gases, and a control device for controlling the switching device such that the exhaust gas flow path is switched to the main exhaust passage when the unburned constituents is adsorbed by the HC adsorbent material, that the exhaust gas flow path is switched to the bypass exhaust passage when the unburned constituents adsorbed by the HC adsorbent material is released from the HC adsorbent material, and that the exhaust gas flow path is switched to the main exhaust passage when the release of the unburned constituents from the HC adsorbent material is completed.

The state determining apparatus has a humidity sensor arranged at a location downstream of the adsorbent in the exhaust system for detecting the humidity of exhaust gases, and an ECU for determining the state of the adsorbent in accordance with the humidity of exhaust gases detected by the humidity sensor, and the ignition time of the internal combustion engine.

A temperature sensor is disposed near an HC adsorbent in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. After the internal combustion engine is shut off, a deteriorated state of the HC adsorbent is evaluated based on a value of the humidity detected by a humidity sensor. The deteriorated state of the HC adsorbent is evaluated by comparing the detected value of the humidity with a threshold established depending on the temperature state near the HC adsorbent. In evaluating deteriorated state of the HC adsorbent, a change in the output characteristics of the humidity sensor depending on its temperature state is compensated for.

A state determining apparatus for an exhaust gas purifier is provided for determining the state of the exhaust gas purifier including an adsorbent for adsorbing hydrocarbons; in accordance with the temperature state in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. The state determining apparatus is arranged in an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine. The state determining apparatus comprises a humidity sensor for detecting the humidity within a bypass exhaust pipe, and an ECU for determining the temperature state of the exhaust system and determining the state of adsorbent in accordance with the humidity within the bypass exhaust pipe detected by the humidity sensor and the temperature state in the exhaust system detected by the ECU.

A fault determining apparatus for an exhaust passage switching valve which is capable of directly, rapidly and properly determining a fault in an exhaust passage switching valve, under conditions such as immediately after the start of an internal combustion engine, in which the switching valve should be essentially operated, without the need for setting a special fault determining mode. The fault determining apparatus determines a fault in the exhaust passage switching valve for switching an exhaust passage of exhaust gases discharged from an internal combustion engine between a main exhaust passage having a three-way catalyst and a bypass exhaust passage having filled in an intermediate portion thereof an adsorbent capable of adsorbing hydrocarbons and moisture in the exhaust gases in accordance with an activated state of the three-way catalyst. The fault determining apparatus comprises a humidity sensor for detecting a humidity of the exhaust gases introduced into the bypass exhaust passage, and an ECU for determining a fault in the exhaust passage switching valve based on the result of detection performed by the humidity sensor when the exhaust passage should have been switched to the bypass exhaust passage by the exhaust passage switching valve.

Exhaust gas sensors or air-fuel ratio sensors for generating outputs depending on the concentration of HC are disposed respectively upstream and downstream of an HC adsorbent in an exhaust passage. When an exhaust gas emitted from an internal combustion engine is supplied to the exhaust passage to allow the HC adsorbent to adsorb HC in the exhaust gas, an amount of HC adsorbed by the HC adsorbent per unit time is determined based on the difference between outputs from the exhaust gas sensors. A deteriorated state of the HC adsorbent is evaluated by comparing the determined adsorbed amount of HC and its integrated value with a threshold set depending on a temperature or the like of the HC adsorbent.

Method of evaluating deteriorated state of exhaust gas adsorbent

A system for discriminating degradation of an exhaust purification system of an internal combustion engine having an adsorbent installed at a bypass exhaust gas passage adsorbing unburned HC in exhaust gas generated by the engine. Based on the assumption that the degradation of the adsorbent made from zeolite progresses or advances depending on its temperature, the temperature is detected and if it exceeds a predetermined temperature, an index indicative of the degree of degradation progress is determined based on a surplus exceeding the predetermined temperature. The index is accumulated to be compared with a threshold value and the adsorbent is discriminated to be degraded when the accumulated index exceeds the threshold value, thereby enabling to discriminate the adsorbent degradation accurately with a simple configuration.

Degradation discrimination system of internal combustion engine exhaust gas purification system

A system for purifying exhaust gas generated by an internal combustion engine having a bypass exhaust gas passage branching from an exhaust pipe which is opened or closed by a switch-over valve, and an adsorbent which adsorbs unburneds component in the exhaust gas installed at the bypass exhaust passage. In the system, when the engine operation is within a high engine speed and high load region, the switch-over valve is operated to open the bypass exhaust gas passage to reduce noise due to switch-over valve chattering, etc. Similarly, the bypass exhaust gas passage is opened at that range, when the exhaust gas temperature is greater or equal to a predetermined value, to introduce high temperature exhaust gas to burn away cloggy material adhered to the adsorbent which would otherwise deteriorate or degrade the adsorbent.
