A method for assessing aging of erythrocytes that includes preparing an erythrocyte suspension from a blood sample; allowing the erythrocyte suspension to pass through a first filter, separating aged erythrocytes that do not pass through the first filter, and non-aged erythrocytes that pass through the first filter, and to calculate a deformability of erythrocytes, allowing the separated non-aged erythrocyte suspension to pass through a second filter having micropores which diameter is smaller than the first filter, separating mild aged erythrocytes that do not pass through the second filter and juvenile erythrocytes that pass through the second filter, and to calculate a deformability of the non-aged erythrocytes; and assessing aging of erythrocytes, using the deformability of erythrocyte and the deformability of non-aged erythrocyte.

[PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED] It enables any superior ether phospholipids to the conventional ones and a method for producing the same in an easy manner on a massive scale, in light of effects of treating and improving brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson disease, depression and schizophrenia, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, various infectious diseases, and immune disorders. [SOLUTION] Ether phospholipids are obtained from bivalve tissues such as clams and corbicula by extraction processing. The ether phospholipids exhibit significantly superior effects of the above as compared to the conventional ether phospholipids derived from chicken tissues.

Ether phospholipids and method for producing the same

The present invention relates to uses of ether phospholipids in treating and preventing various diseases, including, but not limited to, neurodegenerative or brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cognitive impairment, brain fatigue, Parkinson disease, depression, anxiety disorder, insomnia and schizophrenia; metabolic syndrome such as diabetes and obesity; various infectious diseases such as viral diseases; diseases related to inflammation; heart diseases, and immune disorders. Preferably, the ether phospholipids are derived from extracting bivalves, which provides superior efficacies in treating and preventing the diseases.

Uses of ether phospholipids in treating diseases

The present invention provides methods for quantifying an amount of plasmalogens in samples with high accuracy in an easy, convenient and inexpensive manner by using a hydrolysis processing to samples and a lipid extraction followed by the measurement using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Evaporative Light Scattering Detector (ELSD) or Mass Spectrometer (MS), a fluorescence plate reader or a plate reader. The present invention also relates to a method for examining a subject by using the above method, a biomarker for disease detection, a method for using the biomarker for the disease detection, as well as a kit for the disease detection.

Method for quantifying plasmalogens using PLA1 processing

Disclosed is a process for producing sphingomyelin and plasmalogen-form glycerophospholipid, which comprises the step (A) of extracting a total lipids from a chicken skin powder and drying the extract, the step (B) of subjecting the dried total lipids obtained in said step (A), to extraction treatment with a solvent mixture of an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent and a water-soluble ketone solvent to separate an insoluble portion composed mainly of sphingomyelin and a soluble portion, the step (C) subjecting the insoluble portion composed mainly of sphingomyelin, obtained in said step (B), to extraction treatment with a solvent mixture of water and a water-soluble ketone solvent to remove a non-lipid component contained in the soluble portion, and the step (D) of drying the soluble portion obtained in said step (B), and subjecting the thus-obtained dried product to extraction treatment with a water-soluble ketone solvent to separate and recover an insoluble portion composed mainly of plasmalogen-form giycerophospholiuld. According to the above production process, high-purity sphingomyelin, in particular, human-form sphingomyelin and plasmalogen-form sphingomyelin can be produced from chicken skin at high yields with simple procedures.
