A liquid crystal display device including a first substrate, with a plurality of bus lines formed thereon such that they intersect with each other, and a second substrate facing the first substrate. The device also includes a plurality of pixel regions defined by the bus lines; a thin film transistor formed in each of the pixel regions; a color filter layer formed in each of the pixel regions; and a pixel electrode formed in each of the pixel regions. A liquid crystal layer is provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. The liquid crystal layer is located next to a polymeric structure formed by irradiating a mixture of liquid crystal materials and ultraviolet-curing monomers with ultraviolet light, and a black display is achieved when no voltage or a subthreshold voltage is applied.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates and a liquid crystal layer therebetween. The device also includes a plurality of gate bus lines, and a plurality of drain bus lines that intersect the gate bus lines, as well as a plurality of pixel regions defined by the gate and drain bus lines. Additionally, the device includes a thin film transistor and a resin color filter layer formed in each of the pixel regions. There is a pixel electrode formed in each of the pixel regions on the resin color filter layer that includes a slit extending in parallel with an edge of the pixel region and a plurality of finer slits diagonally extending from the slit. Finally, the device includes a common electrode formed on the second substrate, and a vertical alignment film applied to each of surfaces of the substrates.

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, a liquid crystal layer, a plurality of gate bus lines and a plurality of drain bus lines. A plurality of pixel regions are defined by the gate bus lines and the drain bus lines. Pixel electrodes are divided into at least four regions such that at least four domains of different liquid crystal orientation directions are defined within the pixel regions. The first and second regions each include a micro-cutout pattern including a plurality of cutouts extending in a slanted direction with respect to an edge of the first or second region, respectively, and the cutouts of the first region and the cutouts of the second region are generally parallel to each other both within each of the regions as well as across the first and second regions.

A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display, including an insulating substrate cooperating with an oppositely arranged opposite substrate to hold a liquid crystal. A plurality of pixel regions are arranged on the insulating substrate in a matrix form, in each of which a switching element is formed. At least one resin color filter layer is formed on the pixel regions to cover the switching element. A LCD panel is disclosed that provides improved performance of the frame area that surrounds the panel's display area. The frame area includes a transparent substrate, and color filters provided side-by-side on the transparent substrate, each of the color filters filtering one of at least two colors. The LCD panel is further constituted by a first electrode that counters the color filters, a second electrode that counters the first electrode, and liquid crystal that is inserted between the electrodes. Display spots are suppressed and the frame can appear in a desired color when the panel is in operation.

The substrate is configured to have a gate bus line, an OC layer formed on the gate bus line, a pixel electrode formed on the OC layer at each pixel region, and a gate terminal for electrically connecting an external circuit and the gate bus line. The gate terminal includes a gate terminal bottom electrode which has an Al type metal layer having a first end face and a high melting point metal layer formed on the Al type metal layer and having a second end face located outwardly from the first end face and which is electrically connected to the gate bus line and a gate terminal top electrode which is formed of the same material as that of the pixel electrode on the gate terminal bottom electrode and which is electrically connected to the gate terminal bottom electrode without contacting the first end face.

It is an object of the invention to provide a substrate for a liquid crystal display, a liquid crystal display having the same, and a method of manufacturing the same which make it possible to provide a display having high luminance and preferable display characteristics to be used in display sections of information apparatuses and the like. Each pixel is defined by gate bus lines extending in the horizontal direction and drain bus lines extending in the vertical direction. TFTs are formed in the vicinity of intersections between the bus lines, and resin overlap sections for shielding the TFTs from light are formed above the same. No black matrix is formed on a common electrode substrate which is provided in a face-to-face relationship with a TFT substrate, and the bus lines and the resin overlap sections formed on the TFT substrate function as a black matrix.

The substrate for use in the liquid crystal display is constructed to include external connection terminals which include first terminal electrodes electrically connected to gate bus lines led out from a plurality of pixel regions arranged on a glass substrate in a matrix form, second terminal electrodes formed of forming material of a pixel electrode and directly on the glass substrate, and electrode coupling regions for electrically connecting the first and the second terminal electrodes, and which electrically connect an external circuit and the gate bus lines.

A thin film transistor matrix device comprises a transparent insulating substrate, a thin film transistor unit, a picture element unit, a storage capacitance unit, a gate terminal unit, and a drain terminal unit, the storage capacitance unit including a storage capacitance electrode formed on the transparent insulating substrate and formed of a metal layer of the same material as the gate electrode; a dielectric film formed on the storage capacitance electrode and formed of an insulating film common with the gate insulating film and a non-doped semiconductor layer of the same material as the semiconductor active layer; and a counter electrode formed on the dielectric film and formed of a doped semiconductor layer of the same material as the semiconductor contact layer and a metal layer of the same material as the source electrode and the drain electrode, the counter electrode being connected to the picture element electrode through a contact hole opened in a protecting film common with the passivation film. Thus, the fabrication process of the TFT matrix device can be simplified, and lower costs can be realized. Characteristic changes of the storage capacitance can be prevented, and yields and reliability can be improved.
