A rotor includes a plurality of permanent magnets arranged annularly around an axis and a rotor core. The rotor core includes 2N (where N is a natural number) magnetic pole faces and a plurality of magnetic barriers. The 2N magnetic pole faces produce, due to the plurality of permanent magnets, magnetic poles in a radial direction in such a manner that different polarities can be alternately produced around the axis. The magnetic barriers are provided at a side close to the magnetic pole faces relative to the permanent magnets. At least one of the magnetic barriers is provided in each region obtained by equally dividing the rotor core into (2N+1), ((N+1)&#xd7;2) or ((N&#x2212;1)&#xd7;2) angles around the axis.

At a time of a heating high-load operation, a harmonic current is flown in an armature winding to induction-heat rare-earth magnets, thus reducing a residual magnetic flux density. Thereby, the number of rotations of a radial gap type motor is improved. The rare-earth magnets are provided near a cooling medium passage extending substantially in parallel with a flow line of a cooling medium, so that the cooling medium recovers heat of the heated rare-earth magnets. At a time of a cooling high-load operation, a greater number of rotations are obtained with respect to the same torque command value, by a field weakening control by means of a current-phase advance.

An outer rotor motor comprises a rotor rotating about an axis, and a fixed stator. Provided over the inner peripheral surface of a cylindrical part of a fan connecting resin member are a ring-shaped yoke, a ring-shaped rotor magnet fixed to a fixing slot defined in the radially inner surface of the yoke, and yokes fixed to fixing slots defined in a radially inner surface of the rotor magnet. The rotor magnet is so magnetized that magnetic poles alternately change in a circumferential direction. The yoke covers a radially outer surface of the rotor magnet, and parts on a radially outer side of an axially upper surface and an axially lower surface of the rotor magnet.
