A liquid crystal display includes: a pair of substrates including at least one transparent substrate; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the pair of substrates; and an electrode group formed on at least one of the pair of substrates so as to apply an electric field to the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer contains at least one kind of liquid crystalline compound and at least one kind of chiral dopant. The concentration c of the chiral dopant is lower than a saturation solubility s thereof. The concentration c of the chiral dopant and a helical twisting power [HTP] of the chiral dopant satisfy a relation of [HTP]&#xb7;c&#x2267;5.5 (&#x3bc;m).

Liquid crystal display

Provided is a liquid crystal display device, including: a first substrate including a first electrode and a second electrode each including a plurality of linear electrodes and formed so as to be comb-like; a second substrate; a blue-phase liquid crystal layer; first drain lines and second drain lines extending in Y direction and provided side by side in X direction; gate lines extending in the X direction; a first thin film transistor for supplying a drain signal from one of the first drain lines to the first electrode; a second thin film transistor for supplying a drain signal from one of the second drain lines to the second electrode, which is plate-like and formed on the blue-phase liquid crystal layer side of the second substrate so as to cover at least a region in which pixels are formed.

Liquid crystal display device

An organic light-emitting display device is provided that has prolonged service life, lowered wiring resistance that can lower power consumption, and that is easy to manufacture. Provided is a liquid crystal display device, including: a liquid crystal layer filled between a first and a second substrate; two polymer structures; and a plurality of pixels each including a first and a second electrode, one of the first and the second electrode being a pixel electrode, in which: each of the plurality of pixels is provided within a region surrounded by a signal line, a part of the signal line being formed between adjacent two of the plurality of pixels; each of the two polymer structures, which extends along the part of the signal line so as to sandwich the part of the signal line in plan view and is formed from one of the first and the second substrate toward another thereof, is formed so as to overlap with any of the region; and the two adjacent polymer structures has the liquid crystal layer provided therebetween.

Liquid crystal display device and manufacturing method therefor

There is provided a liquid crystal device that exhibits excellent response properties over a wide temperature range even when the weight percentage of the polymerizable monomer used for generating polymers is decreased. The liquid crystal device according to the present invention is a liquid crystal device which includes a first substrate and a second substrate, at least one of which has an electrode group formed thereon for driving liquid crystals; and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, in which the liquid crystal layer contains a polymer which is eccentrically distributed on at least one substrate side among the first substrate and the second substrate.

Liquid crystal devices

Provided is an electro-optical device which allows high-speed response and has high luminance and contrast. A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display panel having a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer held in a sandwiched condition between the substrates, and a pixel electrode and common electrode disposed on the second substrate in order to drive the liquid crystal layer. A backlight is disposed on one face of the liquid crystal display panel, a first polarizer disposed on one face of the first substrate, at a side opposite to the second substrate, and a second polarizer disposed on one face of the second substrate, at a side opposite to the first substrate. The liquid crystal layer has a property of generating optically anisotropy from an optical isotropic state when a voltage is applied, and the liquid crystal display panel includes a transmission area and a reflection area in one pixel.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

The liquid crystal display device according to this invention comprises: a first substrate having a first polarization layer on a light incident side; a second substrate having a second polarization layer on a light outgoing side; a first birefringent medium disposed between the first polarization layer and the liquid crystal layer; a second birefringent medium disposed between the second polarization layer and the liquid crystal layer; a pixel electrode and a common electrode arranged on one of the first substrate and the second substrate; wherein an absorbing axis of the first polarization layer and an absorbing axis of the second polarization layer form an angle of from 88 degrees to 92 degrees; wherein the liquid crystal layer has a property that an in-plane refractive index anisotropy is induced in the liquid crystal layer by an electric field produced by the pixel electrode and the common electrode.

A liquid crystal display device is provided with an electrode structure for effective utilization of optically isotropic liquid crystals. Such a liquid crystal display device comprises a first substrate; a second substrate; polarizing plates provided on the first substrate and the second substrate, respectively; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; and pixel electrodes and common electrodes provided on the first substrate, wherein the liquid crystal layer has such a property that optical anisotropy is induced therein by a change of an optically isotropic state caused by a voltage; wherein ones of the pixel electrodes and the common electrodes are formed in an inter-digital form, while the other ones are formed in a flat plate, and wherein an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer by a potential difference between the pixel electrodes and the common electrodes.

Optically isotropic liquid crystal display device with interdigitally formed pixel and common electrodes

An object of the present invention is to reduce defects in display due to short-circuiting in liquid crystal display devices using a liquid crystal material containing organic particles having anisotropy in a uniaxial form. The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device with: a first substrate; a second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer, a pixel electrode and a common electrode placed between the above described first substrate and the above described second substrate, wherein the above described liquid crystal layer contains a number of organic particles having anisotropy in a uniaxial form, and the longitudinal axis of the particle having the longest longitudinal axis from among the above described particles is no greater than the thickness of the above described liquid crystal layer or the distance between the above described pixel electrode and the above described common electrode&#x2014;whichever is shorter.

Disclosed herein is a liquid-crystal display device capable of reducing leakage of light under a black state due to scattering from a liquid-crystal layer, and having high-contrast ratio, excellent image quality performance. The liquid-crystal display device comprises: a liquid-crystal panel including one pair of polarizers disposed on one pair of substrates, a liquid-crystal layer held in sandwiched form between the pair of substrates, and a group of electrodes formed on at least one of the pair of substrates for applying an electric field to the liquid-crystal layer; and a light source unit disposed outside the pair of substrates. The liquid-crystal layer includes a liquid-crystal material having an ordinary-light refractive index of at least 1.46, but up to 1.49, an extraordinary-light refractive index of at least 1.54, but up to 1.59, and a mean photoelastic constant of at least 8, but up to 25, and exhibiting a nematic phase.

A liquid crystal display device comprises: a first substrate having a first polarization layer on a light incident side; a second substrate having a second polarization layer on a light outgoing side; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and the second substrates; a first birefringent film disposed between the first and the second polarization layers; a second birefringent film disposed between the first birefringent film and the second polarization layer; and wherein the liquid crystal layer has a property that a refractive index anisotropy is induced in it by an electric field applied between the pixel electrodes and the common electrode; wherein in-plane retarded phase axes of the first and the second birefringent films form an angle of from 88 degrees to 92 degrees with the first polarization layer; wherein the first birefringent films have Nz coefficients greater than 0.5 and smaller than 0.5, respectively.

A liquid crystal display device having a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer filled between the pair of substrates and a plurality of pixel electrodes and common electrodes formed on one of the pair of substrates for supplying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal display device is configured so that a response time between a lowest brightness level and a highest brightness level is less than 16.7 ms, and the liquid crystal layer contains a range of 40% or more weight percentage to 100% or less weight percentage of a constituent component with a dielectric anisotropy of &#x394;&#x3b5;&#x2266;1.
