A thickness of each hologram lens for forming a hologram color filter is set so as to be smaller as the wavelength of light to be diffracted by each hologram lens is shorter. A thin plate glass layer is bonded to a surface of the hologram color filter such that it is in a firm contact therewith by adhesive agent and a sum of the thickness of the thin plate glass layer and thickness of the adhesive agent is smaller than the shortest focal length of the focal lengths in glass of a plurality of the hologram lenses. As a result, light diffracted and divided by the hologram color filter is focused on a picture element electrode of a corresponding color properly thereby eliminating deterioration of color reproduction due to mixing of colors. Further, upon production of the hologram color filter from hologram recording material, an influence of a fringe rotation is compensated.

A color display apparatus includes a light source for emitting white light, a spectral unit for dispersing the white light into a red (R) light ray, a green (G) light ray, and a blue (B) light ray, and a spatial light modulation device. The spatial light modulation device includes a single hologram lens layer for diffracting and emitting incident light rays in predetermined directions depending on incident angles and wavelength bands and a liquid-crystal panel having a liquid-crystal layer for performing light modulation according to video signals of corresponding colors to light rays admitted through the hologram lens layer to emit the light rays, and color light components of an R light ray, a G light ray, and a B light ray admitted on the spatial light modulation device through the spectral unit are admitted on the hologram lens layer at different incident angles of the respective color light rays.

A liquid crystal displaying apparatus has a reflection-type liquid crystal display with vertical orientation-mode liquid crystals, to modulate linearly polarized light. Also provided is a polarization and diffracting section to convert read light beams obliquely incident thereto to the linearly polarized light, to allow the linearly polarized light to be incident to the liquid crystal display, allow first polarized light components of the linearly polarized light modulated by the liquid crystal display to pass therethrough, the first polarized light components vibrating in a first direction perpendicular to a second direction in which the linearly polarized light vibrates, and diffract second polarized light components of the linearly polarized light to a third direction from which the read light beams be incident to the liquid crystal display, the second polarized light components vibrating in the second direction. Reflection-type liquid crystal displaying apparatus

A color filter which, in a reflection type color picture projector using a polarized light component as a projection light, improve the utilization factor of light and a color picture display device using the same color filter are provided. The color filter 3 using a transmission type hologram diffracts and spectroscopically separates P polarized light components related to respective primary colors and condenses them to pixel electrodes 13r, 13g, and 13b on the side of an LCD panel 1. Color filter and color picture display device using the same

A liquid crystal displaying apparatus has an active matrix liquid crystal display provided with a plurality of liquid crystal displaying devices arranged in a horizontal and a vertical direction to form a matrix. The apparatus further includes a horizontal driver provided along rows of the devices, a first vertical driver provided along the leftmost column of the devices and a second vertical driver provided along the rightmost column of the devices. The horizontal driver supplies video signals to the devices by scanning the devices left to right or right to left in a direction of the rows. The first vertical driver supplies control signals to the liquid crystal display to turn on the devices from the leftmost to the rightmost column of the devices when the horizontal driver scans the devices left to right in the direction of the rows. On the other hand, the second vertical driver supplies control signals to the liquid crystal display to turn on the devices from the rightmost to the leftmost column of the devices when the horizontal driver scans the devices right to left in the direction of the rows. The horizontal driver may include a first horizontal driving section provided along the uppermost row of the devices and a second horizontal driving section provided along the lowermost row of the devices. The first horizontal driving section scans the devices left to right in the direction of the rows or the second horizontal driving section scans the devices right to left in the direction of the rows in response to a selection signal.

Apparatus and method of driving active matrix liquid crystal display

A spatial light modulator and a lighting system used in, for example, projection displays are provided. The lighting system has a polarizing plate optically disposed in parallel to a light modulating layer of the spatial light modulator, thereby orienting the polarization of readout light beams incident on the spatial light modulator in the same direction to increase the contrast of images projected on a screen. The spatial light modulator is provided with a coupling prism having a side surface opposed to an entrance surface on which the readout light beams are incident. The side surface is so inclined inward as to allow stray light in the coupling prism to go out of the coupling prism without being reflected, thereby eliminating a decrease in contrast of images with a screen caused by the stray light.

An improved color filter and a color image display apparatus employs the filter, the color filter has a hologram device for spectrally diffracting an incident light into plural light beams of different wavelength regions and selectively converging the plural light beams on respective plural picture element electrodes corresponding to the different wavelength regions. The hologram device has such characteristics that S-polarized components of the incident light are diffracted at a maximum diffraction efficiency at a predetermined incident angle of the incident light, and P-polarized components of the incident light are diffracted as such that a difference between the maximum diffraction efficiency of the S-polarized components and the diffraction efficiency of the P-polarized components is not less than 30%, and the diffracted S-polarized components are formed as the plural light beams to be converged on the plural picture element electrodes corresponding to the different wavelength regions.

A color filter includes a plurality of color pixels, and a first hologram diffracting an incident light beam into a first diffraction-resultant light beam. An image formation apparatus using a recording medium including a scattering-mode light-modulation member which takes an opaque state in response to a heat and takes a transparent state in response to an electric field. The apparatus comprises an electrode device disposed in opposed relation to the recording medium and a charge removal device facing or in contact with the recording medium. The electrode device applies an electric field to the recording medium thereby completely erasing an image previously recorded in the recording medium and the charge removal device removes charge left in the recording medium due to application of the electric field by the electrode device. After the erasure, the recording medium is heated by a thermal head in accordance with an information signal from an external device so as to form a new image in the recording medium.

A system has a first electrode, a second electrode, a photosensitive member located between the first and second electrodes, a recording member located between the first and second electrodes, and an optical shutter. In this system, light having information to be recorded is applied to the photosensitive member. The light information is recorded on the recording member. An exposure amount of the light with respect to the photosensitive member is set by setting a time during which the optical shutter remains open. A drive voltage of a predetermined variation is applied between the first and second electrodes during the recording of the light information on the recording member.
