The storage system includes a plurality of storage nodes each including a processor and a memory, and a storage device. Each of the plurality of storage nodes includes a storage controller configured to run on the processor, the plurality of storage controllers include an active storage controller configured to process data output to and received from the storage device, and a standby storage controller configured to take over the processing of the data from the active storage controller, each of the active storage controller and the standby storage controller is allocated with a storage area of the memory, and the storage node changes an amount of a memory capacity allocated for the storage controller of the self-node when a state of the storage controller is switched between a standby state and an active state.

Disclosed is a storage system that performs a drive data layout change while maintaining I/O functionality. The storage system creates a redundancy group for forming a redundant configuration of data to be stored in a storage drive, and stores data of the redundancy group in a plurality of the storage drives. A processor in a storage node discards data stored in a unit storage area, recovers the discarded data according to a changed data format, and re-stores the recovered data in the storage drive. The processor in the storage node performs an I/O process on the data to be discarded during a data format change, by achieving recovery based on the data of the redundancy group that is stored in an area other than the unit storage area where the data format is to be changed.

To set an appropriate buffer area in a storage system that performs hierarchical storage management. The storage system includes a storage device that provides a storage pool and a storage management unit that manages the storage pool in a tiered manner.
