A self-service point-of-sale (POS) terminal for a customer to register a commodity to be purchased in a store, includes an input device, a reading device configured to read a symbol on a commodity, a network interface configured to receive, from an external device operated by a store clerk or the like, instruction information that instructs output of caution information, and a processor. According to one embodiment, a reading device is a device for obtaining information for identifying a merchandise, and includes a housing, an imaging unit, a main illumination unit, and an auxiliary illumination unit. The housing includes a reading window having a property of transmitting light. The imaging unit is built in the housing and captures an image through the reading window. The main illumination unit illuminates an imaging target located on the opposite side of the imaging unit with the reading window interposed therebetween by emitting light outward the housing, and is arranged at the upper edge portion of the reading window. The auxiliary illumination unit illuminates the imaging target by emitting light outward the housing through the reading window, and is arranged inner side than the main illumination unit.

Reading device

A reading device according to an embodiment includes a scanner configured to read code information indicated by a code symbol, a holder configured to detachably hold the scanner, a detecting unit configured to detect a first state in which the scanner is held by the holder and a second state in which the scanner is detached from the holder, and a setting-condition changing unit configured to, if the detecting unit detects the second state, set setting conditions relating to the reading by the scanner such that a reading distance of the scanner is shorter than the reading distance in the first state.

A symbol reading device includes a plurality of reading units and a processor. The reading units read symbols on articles conveyed along a conveyance path. The processor is configured to acquire symbol information from a plurality of articles and store the symbol information in association with each of the reading units that read the symbols on respective articles, then identify a reading unit that can be substituted by another reading unit based on the symbol information associated with the reading units. The identified reading unit in then placed into a power saving state.

A sales registration apparatus includes a reader to read information from a commodity and a main body on an upper surface of a checkout counter. The main body houses the reader and comprises a plurality of side surface regions distributed adjacently along a side surface in a height direction of the main body. A plurality of cover sections including panel surfaces having a planar dimension substantially matching a planar dimension of least one of the plurality of side surface regions. An attachment section in each of the plurality of side surface regions and configured to permit attachment of a corresponding cover section in the plurality of cover sections in a detachable manner. At least two of the side surface regions have the same size such that a cover section matching one of will also match the other of the at least two side surface regions.

Sales registration apparatus

In an embodiment, a reading device comprises a housing having a height. A first reading window is on a first surface side of the housing at a first height position. A first reading unit is inside the housing and configured to direct light out the first reading window for imaging an item. A second reading window is on a second surface side of the housing at a second height position that is less than the first height position in height. A second reading unit is inside the housing and configured to direct light out the second reading window for imaging an item.

First attachment sections are distributed along a side surface of the main body at a fixed interval in the height direction.
