A film deposition method deposits a film on a surface of a substrate in strip form traveling on a peripheral surface of a cylindrical drum in at least one film deposition compartment around the peripheral surface of the drum. The method disposes previously a differential compartment between one film deposition compartment and a compartment including a wrapping space containing at least one of a first position at which the substrate starts to travel on the drum and a second position at which the substrate separates from the drum, the differential compartments communicating with the compartment including the wrapping space and the film deposition compartment, sets a first pressure of the wrapping space lower than a second pressure of the at least one film deposition compartment and performs film deposition in the film deposition compartment with electric power supplied to the drum.

A peripheral surface shape measuring apparatus of a roll-like object which measures a peripheral surface shape of the roll-like object such as a magnetic tape bulk roll, comprising a pair of receiving portions on which both ends of a core of the roll-like object are placed, a receiving portion horizontally moving device which moves the pair of receiving portions in an axial direction of the roll-like object, a receiving portion vertically moving device which moves up and down the pair of receiving portions, a position sensor having a probe with a tip urged in a direction of abutting against a surface of the roll-like object to measure the peripheral surface shape of the roll-like object and a sensor moving device which moves the position sensor in the axial direction of the roll-like object.

The peripheral surface shape measuring apparatus can simply and accurately measure a peripheral surface shape of a roll-like object. The peripheral surface shape of a roll-like object is measured by moving a displacement amount measuring device which pinches a diameter direction of the roll-like object with a sensor part and a reference point part arranged opposite to each other in the diameter direction of the roll-like object, from one end side to the other end side in an axial direction of the roll-like object by using a moving device.

A concentration of a gas introduced into a circulation blower and an exhaust blower is reduced with a simple apparatus configuration. In an exhaust system, exhaust gases from a plurality of drying chambers are joined to a joining duct to be then exhausted by an exhaust blower. A plurality of exhaust ducts having inlets at different positions in each drying chamber are provided, and the exhaust duct having the inlet in the lowest gas concentration area is used as a duct for an exhaust gas circulated to a circulation blower.

Drying apparatus

A magnetic recording medium which enables not only getting rid of trouble due to scrapes occurring in a selvage portion of a web, but also preventing blocking trouble from occurring in heat treatment during post processing and a method of producing the same. A release coat is formed on a back surface of the web at least at portions in contact with overcoatedly primed portions so that the overcoatedly primed portions will not stick to the back surface of the web, whereby the overcoatedly primed portions can prevent scrapes from occurring in selvage portions of the web during the coating of the web with a magnetic fluid, in addition, the overcoatedly primed portions will not stick to the back surface of the web, due to the release coat, during the heat treatment of the magnetic recording medium produced into a roll, whereby blocking trouble can also be prevented from occurring.

Magnetic recording media having a specific width relationship between the magnetic coat and primer coat and producing method thereof

There is provided a coating method in which an extrusion-type coating head having a plurality of doctor edge surfaces is pressed onto a flexible support laid and running between pass rollers so as to coat the flexible support with a coating composition ejected from a slit, the method comprising the steps of: preparing a lower-layer coating composition so as to have a viscosity of not less than 1 P at rest and a viscosity of not more than 50 cP at a shear rate of 10,000 sec ; excessively applying the lower-layer coating composition to a surface of the support; scraping a surplus of the lower-layer coating composition by the coating head so that a lower layer is formed; and applying an upper-layer coating composition, which is ejected from the slit, onto the lower layer.

Coating method

In a method for producing a magnetic recording medium, at least one magnetic layer is formed on a nonmagnetic support by coating. After all coating processes are completed, heat treatment is performed by heat-treating the support, which is undergone all the coating processes, at 95 to 140&deg; C. for 1.0 to 10.0 seconds with continuously applying tension of from 1.0 to 4.0 kg/m to the support. Then, calendering process is performed at a temperature lower than the temperature of the heat treatment.

Method and apparatus for producing magnetic recording medium having a low heat shrinkage factor

An application method of forming a precoat and at least one type of coat sequentially in a wet condition on an application face of a support with an extrusion type coating head of non-pressurizing type having a front edge,positioned in the upstream with respect to a move direction of the support and a back edge,positioned in the downstream with respect to the support move direction and having an acute-angle tip formed so as to recede in the direction opposite to the support from the tip of the front edge. The difference between values of solubility parameters at application temperature of solvents contained in both the precoat,and the coat,contiguous to the precoat is made 1.5 or less.

Application method

In a web cleaning and destaticizing apparatus, an upper surface of a front edge is shaped into a curve with a large radius of curvature so that a cleaning solution applied onto a surface of a web W can be smoothed. An upper surface of a doctor blade is shaped into a curve with a small radius of curvature so that a great part of the cleaning solution SOL1 smoothed by the upper surface of the front edge can be scraped off into a front slit,. An upper surface of a back edge,is formed so that an undercoat solution can be applied onto the surface of the web just after the great part of the cleaning solution is scraped off by the upper surface of the doctor blade,. Accordingly, the allowable range of web incident angle can be widened by the front edge, so that not only the cleaning solution can be scraped off by the doctor blade without scattering in the surrounding directions but also static electricity accumulated can be eliminated rapidly and efficiently by the undercoat solution.

Web cleaning and destaticizing apparatus

Coating equipment 20 with an extrusion type coating head comprising a back edge 6 having a top side which slopes away from a support from the height of the top of a front edge 5, a coating fluid spouting slot 4 defined by both the edges, and guide plates for regulating the width of a coating fluid spouted from the slot tip on both side ends of the slot for applying the coating fluid to the support surface from the slot 4 in a non-pressurized condition. The nearest point to the support surface in the slot corresponding portion of the upper edge of the guide plate 7 is positioned slightly upstream from the center line of the width of the slot along the support running direction and the area given by the product of the distance between the nearest point and the support surface and the width of the slot is made a specific value or less. The coating equipment thus formed has no risk of damaging the support and effectively lessens the effect of air entering from both end sides of an application point of a coating fluid during a high speed thin coat application and produces no film cut when the coating fluid is applied to the running support surface by non-pressurization type coating equipment.

Extrusion-type coating equipment for uniformly applying a coating fluid

An apparatus for high speed manufacturing of thin-film coated products, wherein the coating thickness is even and the products do not contain uneven streaks. The apparatus includes a coating head having a frontedge disposed on an upstream side of a support, a backedge disposed on a downstream side of the support, and a top end receding stepwise away from the frontedge and away from the support. The backedge has an acute-angled top end portion. The coating apparatus is configured so that filtration central-line waves (W.sub.CA) are formed in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement of the support. These waves are formed in slit inner surfaces, a frontedge surface and a backedge surface of a top end portion of the coating head. Each wave in these surfaces is less than or equal to 0.2 .mu.m in length.

Coating apparatus

In the condition that a support is liquid-sealed with a precoat solution mainly containing a solvent and being applied onto the coating surface of the support in advance, a coating composition, prepared by dispersing powder of a mean particle size not larger than 0.4 .mu.m, is applied so as to be laminated onto the precoat solution by means of an extrusion head. The extrusion head has a front edge located at the upstream side with respect to the direction of movement of the support, and a back edge located at the downstream side with respect to the direction of movement of the support so that an end of the back edge retreats farther from the support with a difference in level than the front edge. The wet film thickness of the precoat solution is made to be in a range not larger than 1/3 of the wet film thickness of the coating composition. A coating method in which the surface quality of a coating film formed on a surface of a support can be improved is therefore provided.

A method for producing a magnetic recording medium which results in the effective oblique orientation of magnetic fine particles without aggregation of the particles. The method results in a magnetic recording medium having an upper magnetic layer containing needle-shaped, granular, or plate-like magnetic particles, and at least one lower nonmagnetic layer formed on a nonmagnetic support so that the magnetic particles have the maximum degree of orientation in an oblique or perpendicular direction with respect to a surface of the support. The oblique or perpendicular orientation is performed in the wet state of a magnetic layer and in the condition in which the amount of the solvent residue in the upper magnetic layer is 40 to 80% after the upper magnetic layer and the lower nonmagnetic layer are applied sequentially or simultaneously to form a multilayer. The upper magnetic layer is formed so as to be thinner than the lower nonmagnetic layer and subjected to horizontal orientation with a plane of the surface of the support.

Method for producing a magnetic recording medium including wet

A method of applying a liquid to a flexible substrate and more particularly to a method in which a magnetic liquid or the like is applied to a flexible area so that a thin liquid film is disposed on the carrier for manufacturing an application-type magnetic recording medium. The method includes positioning carrier and a back edge portion of an application head near each other, discharging the liquid from a slot provided in the head and lapping the carrier and the doctor edge portion of the head, located downstream of the slot, with each other at a predescribed lap angle for the application, and thereafter performing the application. The method further includes moving a path roller which is disposed upstream of the head and to adjust the lap angle, discharging the liquid from the slot of the head and moving the carrier to the head. According a further aspect of the invention, a downstream roller is moved in the direction of the carrier to further adjust the lap angle of the doctor edge portion. According to a further aspect of the invention, rather than translating the path rollers, the head is rotated a predescribed angle such that the back edge portion of the head is first placed near the carrier. Thereafter, liquid is discharged from the slot and the head is rotated so as to properly set the lap angle of the doctor edge portion.
