A magnetic disk apparatus includes a rotation mechanism for driving a magnetic disk, a magnetic head slider being floated in close proximity to a surface of the magnetic disk, a recording/reproduction element for performing recording and playback of information, a drive unit for causing a distance between the record/reproduction element and the magnetic disk to change, and an arrangement to effect position determination of the magnetic head slider, wherein the apparatus has a detection unit for permitting the drive unit to gradually reduce the distance between the record/reproduction element and the magnetic disk and for detecting occurrence of contact therebetween, and a control unit for controlling the drive unit in such a way as to cause, the record/reproduction element to shift in position by a fixed amount to thereby let the distance between this element and magnetic disk increase accordingly.

In a magnetic disk drive which comprises a magnetic head slider, a magnetic head slider support mechanism for supporting the magnetic head slider and moving it to a predetermined position, and a load/unload mechanism for detaching the magnetic head slider from the surface of a magnetic disk or moving it thereto, when the magnetic head slider is detached from the magnetic disk surface for unloading, the magnetic head slider support mechanism is restrained against displacement in at least one direction perpendicular to the magnetic disk surface by a restraining part which is provided at a position, on other than the load/unload mechanism, between the magnetic head slider and a pivot of the magnetic head slider support mechanism. Thus, it is possible to enhance impact resistance of the magnetic disk drive during non-rotation.

A magnetic disk drive provided with a loadunload mechanism of the rampload type is disclosed, in which even if loading and unloading operations are frequently repeated, damage to a head due to impingement during the unloading operation is eliminated, and a ramp and the lift-tab of a suspension are less liable to wear, and an operation failure or malfunction due to wear debris is eliminated, thereby providing the drive of high reliability. The ramp is supported for minute displacement, and the posture of the ramp is changed during the unloading operation. The restraining members for restraining the posture of the ramp are provided, and the cushioning members are provided at portions that the ramp and the restraining members come into contact with each other. There can be achieved a drive of high reliability in which even if the loading and unloading operations are frequently repeated, damage to the head due to impingement of the lift-tab during the unloading operation is eliminated, and the lift-tab and the ramp are less liable to wear, and an operation failure due to wear debris is eliminated.

A magnetic head slider assembly for a magnetic disk type recording/reproducing apparatus includes a slider body, a sliding pad provided on the slider body and projecting beyond a disk facing surface thereof, a thin film layer disposed at one end of the slider body, a magnetic head constituted by the thin film layer as an integral part thereof, and a core pad projection incorporating therein a core of the magnetic head and projecting beyond an adjacent disk facing surface of the slider body. The sliding pad is provided at a region of the slider body ahead of the core pad projection and prevents generation of a floating force by making use of a relative movement between the slider body and the magnetic disk. The core pad projection is not formed as a continuation of the slider body and is separated from the sliding pad a predetermined distance longitudinally of the slider body by a recess interposed therebetween whereby the core pad projection is positioned closer to the magnetic disk than a back end of the sliding pad.

A magnetic head slider assembly for a magnetic disk type recording/reproducing apparatus includes a slider body, a floating pad provided on the slider body and projecting beyond a disk facing surface thereof, a thin film layer disposed at one end of the slider body, a magnetic head constituted by the thin film layer as an integral part thereof, and a core pad projection incorporating therein a core of the magnetic head and projecting beyond an adjacent disk facing surface of the slider body. The core pad projection is not formed as a continuation of the slider body and is separated from the floating pad a predetermined distance longitudinally of the slider body by a recess interposed therebetween whereby the core pad projection is positioned closer to the magnetic disk than a back end of the floating pad whereby influence of a process offset between the slider body and the magnetic head during fabrication process can be eliminated.

The present invention provides a magnetic disc file which comprises a thin film magnetic disc for recording information, a motor for rotating the thin film magnetic disc, a magnetic head for writing and reading information, the head being provided with a flying slider, and a carriage for supporting the magnetic head and changing the position of the head in respect of the thin film magnetic disc, the flying height of the flying slider from the thin film magnetic disc being set in the range of 0.05 to 0.15 .mu.m, and the slider being not in contact with the thin film magnetic disc during the seeking operation on the thin film magnetic disc, the slider being a sintered body containing a metal oxide or oxides in an amount of 50 vol % or more based on the total of said body and containing 0.01 wt % to 2 wt % of fluorine based on the total of the body; a thin film magnetic head which comprises a flying slider of the same sintered body as mentioned above, and a head element formed on the surface of the slider; and a wafer for making thin film magnetic heads, which comprises the same sintered body as mentioned above.

The present invention provides; a magnetic disk recorder comprising (i) magnetic disks having magnetic recording media, (ii) thin-film magnetic heads for recording information in the recording media and reproducing information therefrom, and (iii) a carriage for moving the magnetic heads to intended positions, the recorder being wherein the thin-film magnetic heads are formed on sliders and these sliders comprise sintered bodies containing a non-magnetic metal oxide of spinel structure and harder ceramic particles than the metal oxide which are dispersed in the metal oxide; a sintered body useful particularly as a material for the magnetic head slider, a method for making the sintered body, and a magnetic head and a magnetic head slider, for recording and reproducing information, which are made by using the sintered body.
