Provided are a circularly polarizing plate in which the black tint variation is suppressed in a case where a display device obtained by attaching the circularly polarizing plate to a display element is displayed in black and is then viewed from the front direction in a sunlight environment, and a display device. The circularly polarizing plate is has a polarizer, a first optically anisotropic layer, and a second optically anisotropic layer in this order, in which the first optically anisotropic layer is a layer formed by fixing a liquid crystal compound twist-aligned along a helical axis extending in a thickness direction, the second optically anisotropic layer is an A-plate, an absorption axis of the polarizer and an in-plane slow axis of the second optically anisotropic layer are parallel or orthogonal to each other, and the first optically anisotropic layer and the second optically anisotropic layer exhibit predetermined optical properties.

Circularly polarizing plate and display device

A circularly polarizing plate in which tint unevenness in an oblique direction can be suppressed when the circularly polarizing plate is applied to an organic EL display device. The circularly polarizing plate includes a polarizer and a phase difference film laminated on one surface side of the polarizer, in which it has a moisture content of 1.8% or less, an absolute value of a chromaticity a* and chromaticity b* are 10 or less at any azimuthal angle, in a case where the chromaticity a* and b* are measured at all azimuthal angles with a polar angle of 40° from a normal direction of the circularly polarizing plate of a laminate, and when a reflectivity is measured at all azimuthal angles with a polar angle of 40° from the normal direction of the circularly polarizing plate of the laminate, the reflectivity is 3.0% or less at any azimuthal angle.

Circularly polarizing plate, organic electroluminescent display device, and display device

Provided is a method for producing an optically anisotropic layer, with a polarizer, which has a plurality of regions in which alignment states of a liquid crystal compound are fixed and different from one another; laminate, with a polarizer; and a composition. The method includes: 1) forming a composition layer containing a chiral agent containing at least a photosensitive chiral agent and a polymerizable liquid crystal compound on a substrate, 2) subjecting the composition layer to a heat treatment, 3) subjecting the composition layer to light irradiation under oxygen concentration of 1% by volume or more, after step 2), and 4) subjecting the composition layer to a curing treatment to form an optically anisotropic layer, and 5) carrying out step 3) under heating conditions, or subjecting the composition layer to a heat treatment between step 3) and step 4), with a predetermined amount of chiral agent.

Provided is an optically anisotropic layer formed of a liquid crystal compound, which includes first and second layers in direct contact along a thickness direction, an alignment state of the liquid crystal compound in the first layer is different from the second layer, and the optically anisotropic layer satisfies a relationship of Expression (2A) Xmax/Xmin<1.10 where a region within a square having a largest size that can be drawn on a surface of the optically anisotropic layer is subdivided into 64 square-shaped sub-regions having the same area, a thickness d1 of the first layer and a thickness d2 of the second layer at a center position of the sub-region are obtained, X represented by Expression (1) X=d1/(d1+d2) for each sub-region is calculated, and among the calculated 64 X's, a maximum value is defined as Xmax and a minimum value is defined as Xmin.

Optically anisotropic layer

Provided is a circularly polarizing plate with which, in a case where a display device obtained by disposing the circularly polarizing plate on a display element is viewed from an oblique direction while the direction thereof is being changed, the display device exhibits little change in tint and has a low reflectivity; and an organic electroluminescent display device. The circularly polarizing plate includes a polarizer and an optically anisotropic layer, in which the optically anisotropic layer is a layer formed by fixing a liquid crystal compound having reverse wavelength dispersibility twist-aligned with a thickness direction as a helical axis, the molecular axis of the liquid crystal compound in the optically anisotropic layer is horizontal to the surface of the optically anisotropic layer, and the twisted angle of the twist-aligned liquid crystal compound is 15° to 360°.

Circularly polarizing plate and organic electroluminescent display device

Provided is an optical film in which black tinting is suppressed in front and oblique directions when the optical film is used as a circularly polarizing plate in an organic EL display device. The optical film is an elongated optical film having optically anisotropic layers (A), (B), and (C), in this order, in which layer (A) is formed by fixing a vertically aligned disk-like liquid crystal compound, layer (B) is formed by fixing a twist-aligned rod-like liquid crystal compound with a thickness direction as a helical axis, layer (C) is formed by fixing a vertically aligned rod-like liquid crystal compound, an in-plane slow axis of layer (A) is parallel to an in-plane slow axis on a surface of layer (B) on a layer (A) side, and layers (A) and (B) are disposed such that the in-plane slow axes thereof satisfy a predetermined positional relationship.

Optical film, circularly polarizing plate, and organic electroluminescent display device class

Provided is an optical film with a resin substrate adhered to an optically anisotropic layer and suppression of occurrence of optical defects in the optically anisotropic layer. The optical film has a resin substrate having an alignment regulating force and an optically anisotropic layer arranged thereon, in which the optically anisotropic layer contains a liquid crystal compound and a compound having a heteroatom different from the liquid crystal compound, and in a case where a surface of the optical film on an optically anisotropic layer side thereof is a first surface and a surface of the optical film on a resin substrate side thereof is a second surface, and components of the optical film in a depth direction are analyzed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry while irradiating the optical film with an ion beam from the first surface toward the second surface, the obtained profile satisfies a predetermined requirement.

The present invention provides an optically anisotropic layer which has a plurality of regions in which alignment states of a liquid crystal compound are different in a thickness direction and in which peeling is unlikely to occur in the layer. The optically anisotropic layer of the present invention is an optically anisotropic layer formed of a liquid crystal compound, in which the optically anisotropic layer contains a leveling agent and satisfies a predetermined requirement in a profile of a secondary ion intensity derived from the leveling agent in a depth direction, which is obtained by analyzing components of the optically anisotropic layer in a depth direction by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry while irradiating the optically anisotropic layer with an ion beam from one surface of the optically anisotropic layer to the other surface of the optically anisotropic layer.

Provided is an optical film that has a thin thickness, is suitable in terms of continuous productivity, and exhibits suppressed tinting of black color in a front direction and an oblique direction in a case of being used as a circularly polarizing plate in an organic EL display device; a circularly polarizing plate; and an organic EL display device. Provided is a liquid crystal composition capable of forming an optically anisotropic layer, and method thereof, in which a variation in a twisted angle of liquid crystal compound in an in-plane direction is suppressed an optical film, and a circularly polarizing plate for an organic EL display. The liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystal, optically active compound A which is a photosensitive optically active compound whose helical twisting power changes upon irradiation with light and has a molar absorption coefficient of 5,000 M&#xb7;cmor more with respect to light having a wavelength of 365 nm, and an optically active compound B having a molar absorption coefficient with respect to light having a wavelength of 365 nm smaller than the molar absorption coefficient of the optically active compound A, in which a mass content ratio of the optically active compound A to the liquid crystal compound is less than 0.01.

Liquid crystal composition, optical film, circularly polarizing plate for organic EL display, and method for producing optically anisotropic layer

This organic EL display device is an organic electroluminescent display device including, from a viewing side, a circularly polarizing plate, a first adhesion layer, and a bendable organic electroluminescent display panel, in which the circularly polarizing plate includes, from the viewing side, a linear polarizer, a second adhesion layer, and a phase difference layer functioning as a &#x3bb;/4 plate, a complex modulus of elasticity of the first adhesion layer is 2.50&#xd7;10Pa or less, the first adhesion layer is thicker than the second adhesion layer, and an absorption axis of the linear polarizer is positioned at an angle of 0&#xb0;&#xb1;30&#xb0; or 90&#xb0;&#xb1;30&#xb0; with respect to an extension direction of a ridge line formed in a case where the organic electroluminescent display device is bent.

The method further includes where both a composition a for forming the layer A and a composition b for forming the layer B contain a fluorine compound, and when the layer A is formed using composition a and layer B is formed using composition b, layer A and layer B are formed in this order under the condition that composition a and composition b satisfy predetermined surface tension relationships.
