A system and method for learning and controlling an air/fuel mixture ratio for an internal combustion engine are disclosed which can achieve the compatibility of both learning convergence characteristic and accuracy of learning and which can prevent a stepwise change in correction coefficients to a basic fuel supply quantity when the present engine driving condition makes the present one of the driving conditions to the other one of the driving conditions. In a preferred embodiment of the air/fuel mixture ratio learning and controlling system, a plurality of learning maps in which the whole driving region is divided into 16 regions and is divided into 258 regions. The learnings of the air/fuel mixture ratio learning correction coefficients KBLRC1 for the 16 driving regions on the first learning map are followed by those of the other air/fuel mixture ratio learning correction coefficients KBLRC2 for the 256 driving regions on the second learning map. After loads of corrections on the learning correction coefficients KBLRC1 are transferred to those of the learning correction coefficients KBLRC2 for the 256 driving regions, the system reads a modified learning correction coefficient KBLRC2 derived through an interpolation between the 256 region learning map. A final learning correction coefficient KBLRC is set using the read correction coefficient KBLRC2 and the learning correction coefficient KBLRC0 applied to the whole driving region so as to correct the basic fuel supply quantity.

A cylinder pressure detecting system includes a plurality of pressure sensors, each of which is provided for monitoring pressure in one of plurality of cylinders. The system performs data sampling of detection values produced by one of the pressure sensors corresponding to a cylinder in an intake stroke, and compares each of the sampled detection values and a predetermined reference minimum value to respectively set differences therebetween as offset correction values. An air/fuel ratio feedback control system for an internal combustion engine sets an air/fuel ratio feedback correction coefficient on the basis of an air/fuel ratio for an air/fuel mixture introduced into a combustion chamber of the engine, to cause the air/fuel ratio to approach a set point thereof. The correction coefficient consists of a rich control proportional component P.sub.R, a lean control proportional component P.sub.L and an integral component I. When the air/fuel ratio set by the feedback control system deviates from an initial set point (the stoichiometric value) due to deterioration of an oxygen sensor for detecting the air/fuel ratio, the feedback control system compensates for the deviation to cause the air/fuel ratio to approach the initial set point, by varying a ratio of the rich control proportional component P.sub.R to the lean control proportional component P.sub.L in accordance with magnitudes of rich and lean detection levels, or by correcting a balance between the rich and lean control proportional components P.sub.R and P.sub.L on the basis of a relationship between signal level varying speeds of the proportional components P.sub.R and P.sub.L, a relationship between rich and lean control times, a relationship between rich and lean detection levels or the like.

A system for identifying a misfired cylinder of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine is provided. The system comprises a sensor which monitors revolutional cycles of cylinders respectively to determine a parameter associated with a variation in an average effective pressure of the cylinder in a preselected relation to the revolutional cycles. When the parameter is less than a preselected level, the system corrects the parameter by a correction factor to provide a second parameter in order to prevent reduction in the average effective pressure due to wavering of engine speed after misfire occurs from causing erroneously detection of the misfire cylinder. The system then compares the second parameter with a slice level to detect occurrence of misfire and identifies the misfired cylinder.
