A liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal panel provided with plural gate lines to select a pixel and plural data lines to supply pixel data and a data driver dividing a single frame into plural fields and converting frame data into field data to supply the field data to the data line is provided. When the frame data has a tone change, the data driver performs correction to data of an odd-number field of the frame in a same direction as an increase/decrease direction of the tone change of the frame data, and performs correction to data of an even-number field of the frame in an opposite direction to the increase/decrease direction of the tone change of the frame data.

A back light is provided with light sources, lighting control circuits for lighting the light sources, respectively, and a brightness control circuit for outputting light volume adjusting signals to the lighting control circuits, respectively. The brightness control circuit receives a luminance adjusting signal, adjusts only a part of the light volume adjusting signals, and fixes output of the rest of the light volume adjusting signals. The lighting control circuits apply voltages corresponding to the light volume adjusting signals to the light sources, thereby adjusting the light sources in luminance. The light volume adjusting signals can be adjusted one by one, which facilitates luminance adjustment. Thus, by lighting only one light source at the minimum luminance, the screen brightness of the liquid crystal display having this back light can be lowered to an appropriate level when it is used in dark places.

In a backlight unit, a plurality of light sources whose luminescent chromaticities are different mutually, i.e., a white color fluorescent tube W, a red color fluorescent tube R, a green color fluorescent tube G, and a blue color fluorescent tube B, are arranged on both end in a longitudinal direction of a light guide plate respectively. The white color fluorescent tube W is arranged at a position closest to the end surface in a longitudinal direction of the light guide plate. Luminances of these fluorescent tubes W, R, G, B can be adjusted independently by control voltages supplied from external devices. Lights emitted from a plurality of light sources enter into the light guide plate, and then the lights are emitted from the light guide plate in a predetermined direction. Since the backlight unit itself has a color adjusting function, the reduction of the luminance and the change of the color balance due to degradation of the fluorescent tubes can be corrected.

A stereoscopic image display apparatus includes an image display apparatus main body and a multi-angle image information generating unit for generating image information for a plurality of viewing angles from which a three-dimensional object is viewed. The image display apparatus main body includes a liquid crystal panel for displaying an angle-specific image derived from the angle-specific image information supplied from the multi-angle image information generating unit, and an angle-specific image radial distribution unit which, provided at the front of the liquid crystal panel, radially distributes the angle-specific image by providing directivity to a light beam carrying the angle-specific image displayed on the liquid crystal panel and thus directing the angle-specific image to a corresponding angle. When a viewer changes a view position or viewing angle, the viewer can experience one stereoscopic image turning into another. Thus, different aspects of the three-dimensional object are disclosed so that an extremely realistic stereoscopic vision that gives an impression that the three-dimensional object is actually behind the stereoscopic image display apparatus is provided.
