A storage apparatus includes a key control part to judge a validity of a data access from a request source based on authorization information received therefrom and authorization information created from an enciphering key included in enciphering key information received from a key management apparatus, and a control part to make the data access to the recording medium using the enciphering key in response to an access request from the request source, if the validity of the data access is confirmed. The authorization information from the request source includes a unique code created from the enciphering key if an authentication is successful in the key management apparatus in response to an authentication request from the request source.

A key data recording device includes a key data recording medium section which stores key data of the encrypted data; and a reading/writing section which reads and writes the key data from and into the key data recording medium section, which sections are contained in a cartridge casing accommodatable in a library unit. When the cartridge casing is irregularly ejected from the library unit, the key data recorded in the key data recording medium section is deleted. This configuration can enhance the confidentiality of encrypted data because the key data is not leaked even when the recording medium in which key data of the encrypted data is recorded is carried away.

A storage apparatus includes at least one device insertion section, at least one robot, a replacement detection section, a first determination section, and a movement section. A device can be inserted into the device insertion section. The robot has a moving mechanism. The replacement detection section detects a start of the replacement of the device. When it is detected by the replacement detection section that the replacement of the device is started, the first determination section determines a position of the device insertion section at which the device is replaced. The movement section moves the robot so as to close an opening formed by removal of the device from the device insertion section based on the determination result of the first determination section.

First and second mobile carriers are accessible to individual cells defined in a storage. The first and second mobile carriers move along overlapped paths. First and second controller circuits are connected to the first and second mobile carriers, respectively. The second controller circuit is also connected to the first mobile carrier. Even when a defect occurs in the first controller circuit, the transport mechanism allows the second controller circuit to take over the control on the first mobile carrier from the first controller circuit. The control on the first mobile carrier serves to avoid interference between the first mobile carrier and any obstacle on the path. If the first mobile carrier is removed from the path of the second mobile carrier, the second mobile carrier is allowed to keep operating. The operation of the transport mechanism can be kept without any interruption.

Fault tolerant transport mechanism in storage and method of controlling the same

There is provided a library device which can be restored to working order quickly and reliably even when a control board containing information necessary for the operation of the library device is replaced. The library device includes a cell array which consists of an array of multiple cells each of which contains one cartridge containing a magnetic tape, magnetic tape drives in which the cartridges are removably mounted and which access the storage medium contained in the cartridges, a robot which transfers the cartridges between the cell array and the magnetic tape drives, a main control board which controls the operation of the entire library device, a barcode label which represents ID information for identification of the library device, and cell flags which are marks used to recognize the locations of the cells composing the cell array.

The ratio is calculated between a first number of pixels and a second number of pixels on an image sensor. The first number of pixels is counted between two certain points projected on the image sensor from a first section of a plane. The second number of pixels is counted between two certain points projected on the image sensor from a second section, adjacent to the first section, of the plane. The number of pixels between two certain points increases if the image sensor gets closer to the plane, while the number of pixels between two certain points decreases if the image sensor gets remoter from the plane. The inclination of the image sensor can be determined relative to the plane based on the ratio between the two numbers of pixels. The attitude or inclination of the image sensor can in this manner be detected with a high accuracy.

Radio tags storing parts identifying information are arranged for the individual constituent modules such as tape drives and conveying robots of the library apparatus. Upon every rise of the apparatus, the conveying robots are moved to positions permitting read of the radio tags arranged on the individual constituent modules. The parts identifying information such as the serial number is read by the tag reader and stored in the non-volatile memory. When this is different from the serial number read in the preceding run, stored in the non-volatile memory, it is determined that the part has been replaced. The statistical information of the number of operating runs is then cleared, and management of the parts service life is started.

Disclosed is a configuration to implement a robot replacement in a library apparatus while maintaining an electrically-activated state. In such a configuration, the library apparatus storing a recording medium (cartridge) for writing and reading information with a host computer, comprises a plurality of robot units, which carries the recording medium; and a control unit (library control unit) which stops power feeding to the robot units if an event is generated until processing time of the event or predetermined time elapses and which transmits to a query from the host computer a response representing that the processing of the event is in progress.

A library apparatus of the present invention has directors which respectively determine operations of two carrying devices traveling along one traveling path. A servo control units move the carrying devices based on the determination of the directors. The serv control units obtain positional data of the carrying devices, and judge whether or not the carrying devices come into contact with each other by comparing these pieces of positional data. The servo control unit, when judging that the carrying devices come into contact with each other, stops a driving circuit of each carrying device. A drive of a motor for supplying each carrying device with power is thereby stopped, and the carrying device is stopped.

A library apparatus in which a plurality of cell drums are divided into two groups respectively placed on the left and right side of a recording/reproducing unit placed in a central part thereof. In this library apparatus, rails are placed in a direction along which the cell drums and the recording/reproducing unit are arranged. The conveying of media, which are contained in the cell drums placed on the left side of the recording/reproducing unit, is assigned to an accessor placed on the left side thereof. Simultaneously, the conveying of media, which are contained in the cell drums placed on the right side of the recording/reproducing unit, is assigned to an accessor placed on the right side thereof. A robot hand of each of the accessors is opened and closed by a turn of a motor. At that time, a power supply is turned off. Moreover, the robot hand is prevented by a locking mechanism from popping out of the accessor. Furthermore, ordinary cartridges are discriminated from cleaning cartridges.
