Provided is a polarizer having a non-polarization portion with reduced shape unevenness. The polarizer of the present invention is a polarizer having a non-polarization portion, in which the non-polarization portion has a shape matching degree of 0.05 or less. In such polarizer, the number of portions where the shape of the non-polarization portion is distorted is small. Accordingly, when the non-polarization portion of the polarizer is used as, for example, a portion corresponding to a camera portion of an image display apparatus, alignment processability is improved and hence the alignment of the camera can be satisfactorily performed.

A polarizer according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a resin film containing iodine, wherein an end portion of the resin film has formed therein a high-concentration portion having a concentration of a substance that forms a counter ion of iodine higher than that of another portion.

There is provided a polarizer having a non-polarization portion that can achieve the multi-functionalization and high-functionalization of an electronic device, such as an image display apparatus, the polarizer being excellent in dimensional stability and external appearance of the non-polarization portion. A polarizer according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a resin film containing a dichromatic substance, wherein: the polarizer has a non-polarization portion at a predetermined position; and the non-polarization portion includes a thin-walled portion thinner than another portion of the resin film.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a liquid crystal display panel having a high contrast ratio. A liquid crystal panel according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: a liquid crystal cell; a first polarizing plate placed on a viewer side of the liquid crystal cell; and a second polarizing plate placed on an opposite side of the liquid crystal cell with respect to the viewer side. A light transmittance (T) of the second polarizing plate is larger than a light transmittance (T) of the first polarizing plate. Such a liquid crystal panel has a remarkably high contrast ratio and shows excellent display properties, compared to conventional liquid crystal panel.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a liquid crystal display panel having a high contrast ratio in a front direction. A liquid crystal panel according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: a liquid crystal cell; a first polarizing plate placed on one side of the liquid crystal cell; a second polarizing plate placed on the other side of the liquid crystal cell; and a retardation layer placed between the liquid crystal cell and the second polarizing plate. A refractive index ellipsoid of the retardation layer exhibits a relationship of n&#x2267;ny&#x3e;nz; and a light transmittance (T) of the second polarizing plate is larger than a light transmittance (T) of the first polarizing plate. Such a liquid crystal panel has a remarkably higher contrast ratio in a front direction than that of a conventional liquid crystal panel (for example, a liquid crystal panel in which the light transmittances of two polarizing plates placed on both sides of a liquid crystal cell are the same), and shows excellent display properties.
