A control method for an electric power steering apparatus for a vehicle includes a control unit having a target value generator and a primary delay system setting unit. The target value generator generates a target value of a steering force or a motor output. The primary delay system setting unit sets a primary delay system, in which a damper value, which changes in accordance with a vehicle speed, is set negative in a low-speed range where the vehicle speed is V0 to V1 (V0&lt;V1) and changed in accordance with the vehicle speed. The damper value is calculated with a steering angular speed of an electric power steering unit. The calculated value is fed back to a difference between the target value and an actual value. The electric power steering unit is controlled using a value obtained by filtering the difference through the primary delay system.

According to a current limiting method in an electric power steering apparatus, a steering angular speed and the direction of a drive current are monitored. A condition in which a steering wheel is locked is discriminated from a condition in which the steering wheel is turned on the basis of combinations of the steering angular speed and the drive current direction. Processing of limiting a current value of an excessive drive current is executed only when the condition in which the steering wheel is locked is determined.

A brake booster for holding the braking action even if the brake pedal is released. The booster has a low pressure chamber and a variable pressure chamber with a diaphragm therebetween for moving the output shaft to the brake cylinder. A valve mechanism mechanically controlled by the brake pedal switches a communication passage between the low and variable pressure chambers and an atmospheric pressure passage from the variable pressure chamber to the exterior. A first solenoid valve can close the communication passage between the low and variable pressure chambers irrespective of the brake pedal position so as to hold the braking. A second solenoid valve can control a passage between the variable pressure chamber and the low pressure source so that the braking release can be gently effected.
