Devised are a glass and glass substrate, which contain an alkaline component at a low content, are low in density and thermal expansion coefficient, are high in strain point and Young's modulus, and are excellent in devitrification resistance, meltability, formability, and the like. That is, the glass of the present invention includes as a glass composition, in terms of mass %, 58 to 70% of SiO, 16 to 25% of AlO, 3 to 8% of BO, 0 to 5% of MgO, 3 to 13% of CaO, 0 to 6% of SrO, 0 to 6% of BaO, 0 to 5% of ZnO, 0 to 5% of ZrO, 0 to 5% of TiO, and 0 to 5% of PO.

Provided is an alkali-free glass, including as a glass composition, in terms of mol %, 60 to 70% of SiO, 9.5 to 17% of AlO, 0 to 9% of BO, 0 to 8% of MgO, 2 to 15% of CaO, 0.1 to 10% of SrO, and 0.5 to 4% of BaO, having a molar ratio (CaO+SrO+BaO)AlOof 0.6 to 1.0, and being substantially free of alkali metal oxides.

Provided is an alkali-free glass, comprising, as a glass composition in terms of mass %, 58 to 70% of SiO, 15.5 to 20% of AlO, 0 to 1% of BO, 0 to 5% of MgO, 3.5 to 16% of CaO, 0.5 to 6.5% of SrO, and 5 to 15% of BaO, being substantially free of alkali metal oxides, and having a strain point of more than 725&#xb0; C.

Provided is an alkali-free glass, which is substantially free of alkali metal oxides, and has a strain point of more than 680&#xb0; C., an average coefficient of thermal expansion in the temperature range of 30 to 380&#xb0; C. of 40 to 55&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C., and a liquidus temperature of less than 1,200&#xb0; C. Further, the alkali-free glass comprises, as a glass composition in terms of mass %, 55 to 70% of SiO, 10 to 20% of AlO, 0.1 to 4.5% of BO, 0 to 1% of MgO, 5 to 15% of CaO, 0.5 to 5% of SrO, and 5 to 15% of BaO.

An alkali-free glass of the present invention comprises, as a glass composition expressed in terms of oxides by mass %, 45 to 70% of SiO, 10 to 30% of AlO, 11 to 20% of BO, less than 0.1% of AsO, less than 0.1% of SbO, and less than 0.1% of an alkali metal oxide, and has a thermal expansion coefficient (30 to 380&#xb0; C.) of 30 to 35&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C.

Provided is an alkali-free glass, comprising, as a glass composition in terms of mass %, 55 to 80% of SiO, 10 to 25% of A1O, 2 to 5.5% of BO, 3 to 8% of MgO, 3 to 10% of CaO, 0.5 to 5% of SrO, and 0.5 to 7% of BaO, having a molar ratio MgO/CaO of 0.5 to 1.5, being substantially free of alkali metal oxides, and having a Young's modulus of more than 80 GPa.

A technical object of the present invention is to satisfy various properties required in glass for liquid crystal displays and the like, in particular, fusibility, devitrification resistance, and like properties, and then to design a glass composition in which components harmful to the environment are reduced or substantially not contained, thereby obtaining a glass substrate that takes the environment into consideration. An alkali-free glass of the present invention contains the following glass composition in percent by weight based on oxide: 50 to 70% of SiO, 10 to 20% of AlO, 8 to 12% of BO, 0 to 3% of MgO, 4 to 15% of CaO, 0 to 10% of SrO, 0 to 1% of BaO, and 0 to 5% of ZnO, and substantially free of alkali metal oxide and AsO.

Provided is a radiation-shielding glass, including a glass composition in % by mass of 10 to 35% SiO, 55 to 80% PbO, 0 to 10% BO, 0 to 10% AlO, 0 to 10% SrO, 0 to 10% BaO, 0 to 10% NaO, and 0 to 10% KO, in which the radiation-shielding glass has a total light transmission at a wavelength of 400 nm at a thickness of 10 mm of 50% or higher.
