A magnetic recording medium with a reduced average grain diameter and reduced grain diameter dispersion is provided. A magnetic recording medium having a magnetic property (magnetic anisotropy energy) applicable as a magnetic recording medium is provided. It is a magnetic recording medium containing a substrate, a grain diameter control layer, a first seed layer, a second seed layer, and a magnetic recording layer containing an ordered alloy in this order, in which the second seed layer is composed of crystal grains having TiN as a main component, and a grain boundary material having at least one or more selected from the group consisting of metal oxides and carbon as a main component.

Magnetic recording medium having tin containing seed layer

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which uses an Ru seed layer having a (002)-oriented hcp structure, and has a magnetic recording layer including a (001)-oriented L1ordered alloy suitable to perpendicular magnetic recording. The magnetic recording medium of the present invention includes a substrate, a first seed layer containing Ru, a second seed layer containing ZnO, a third seed layer containing MgO, and a magnetic recording layer containing an ordered alloy, in this order, the first seed layer having the (002)-oriented hexagonal closest packed structure.

Perpendicular magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium is provided that includes, in the order recited, a substrate; a first seed layer; a second seed layer containing ZnO; a third seed layer containing MgO; and a magnetic recording layer containing an ordered alloy. The first seed layer contains Ru and at least one material selected from the group consisting of oxides, carbides, and nitrides. Employing seed layers enables the magnetic recording medium to be a perpendicular magnetic recording medium by having the magnetic recording layer contain an ordered alloy suitable for perpendicular magnetic recording. Recording density is improved thereby while ensuring required thermal stability. Further, the invention achieves an increased thickness of the magnetic layer and a reduced grain size.

The perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes a non-magnetic substrate and a magnetic recording layer, wherein the magnetic recording layer includes first magnetic recording layers on the side of the non-magnetic substrate and second magnetic recording layers, the first magnetic layers have a granular structure including first magnetic crystal grains containing an ordered alloy and a first non-magnetic segregant surrounding the first magnetic crystal grains and containing carbon; and the second magnetic layers have a granular structure including second magnetic crystal grains containing an ordered alloy and a second non-magnetic segregant surrounding the second magnetic crystal grains and containing Zn and O.

A method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium includes reducing and eliminating impurity gas present in a chamber. A magnetic recording layer is formed and an active material layer is also formed immediately below or immediately above the magnetic recording layer in respective chambers. The active material layer is formed in the same chamber or with a gate opened between the magnetic recording layer chamber and the active material layer chamber.

Method for manufacturing magnetic recording medium

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes a non-magnetic substrate; an underlayer including first and second underlayers; and a magnetic recording layer including a layer having a granular structure including grains of a magnetic crystal and grain boundary portions, wherein the first underlayer has a NaCl structure with a (001) orientation and contains a nitride or an oxide of at least one element. The first underlayer may contain a nitride of at least one of Cr, V, Ti, Sc, Mo, Nb, Zr, Y, Al, and B, and the second underlayer may include a plurality of island-shaped regions and contain at least one of Mg, Ca, Co, and Ni. The first underlayer may contains an oxide of at least one of Mg, Ca, Co, and Ni, and the second underlayer may include net-shaped regions and contain at least one of Cr, V, Ti, Sc, Mo, Nb, Zr, Y, Al, B, and C.

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes at least a nonmagnetic substrate and a magnetic recording layer. The magnetic recording layer is constituted by a plurality of layers that includes at least a first magnetic recording layer and a second magnetic recording layer. The first magnetic recording layer has a granular structure that includes first magnetic crystal grains and first nonmagnetic crystal grain boundaries surrounding the first magnetic crystal grains. The first magnetic crystal grains include an ordered alloy, and the first nonmagnetic crystal grain boundaries are constituted by carbon. The second magnetic recording layer has a granular structure that includes second magnetic crystal grains and a second nonmagnetic crystal grain boundaries that surround the second magnetic crystal grains. The second magnetic crystal grains include an ordered alloy, and the second nonmagnetic crystal grain boundaries are constituted by a carbon-containing nonmagnetic material.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a magnetic recording medium including a magnetic recording layer having more excellent magnetic properties and including an L1type ordered alloy. One constitutional example of the magnetic recording medium includes a substrate, a first seed layer comprising ZnO, a second seed layer comprising MgO, and a magnetic recording layer comprising an ordered alloy, in this order.

Disclosed are a magnetic recording medium for a heat-assisted recording device, which has a high SNR at high density, and a manufacturing method thereof. The magnetic recording medium includes a non-magnetic substrate; a magnetic recording layer; a protective layer; and a liquid lubricating layer. The magnetic recording layer has a granular structure formed by magnetic portions and non-magnetic portions that surround the magnetic portions in which the non-magnetic portions between adjacent magnetic portions are recessed with respect to the magnetic portions. The non-magnetic portions have a volume percentage based on total volume of the granular structure ranging from 15 vol % to 30 vol % and include a carbon-based material. The magnetic recording medium has a surface having an arithmetic mean roughness Ra and an average length of roughness curve elements RSm such that Ra/RSm ranges from 0.05 to 0.15.

Magnetic recording medium for heat-assisted recording device and manufacturing method thereof

A patterned magnetic recording medium, accessible by a magnetic recording head, including a plurality of tracks, a width direction of each track and that of the magnetic recording head being of a skew angle. The patterned magnetic recording medium includes a plurality of magnetic dots, each corresponding to a recording bit, formed on a non-magnetic material. The plurality of magnetic dots are arranged in a plurality of arrays, each array corresponding to one of the tracks.
