The printing control apparatus compares, when printing a bit image, a data set of a transmitted compressed image data to a data set of an untransmitted compressed image data, omits transmission of the data set in the subsequent compressed image data when the data sets coincide with each other, and notifies the printing apparatus that transmission of the data set has been omitted with setting in a printing command. The printing apparatus holds the compressed image data in which the data set has been omitted, and, when it is notified that transmission of the part of the data set has been omitted, generates the bit image by reusing a part of the already existing data set and developing the held compressed image data.

The advantage of the invention is to make settings on a printer to be connected with a network easy. A printer driver is connected with a server device for managing a printer A and an e-mail address by linking them through a network, and transmits print job data to the server device. The printer driver receives designation of an e-mail address managed by the server device, identifies printer A based on the designated e-mail address, and converts data as a target of printing into print job data in accordance with the identified printer A.

A system which enhances the process of specifying the settings of paper input and paper output by a printer driver. The system causes a Properties dialog box to be displayed on a display. The dialog box includes an image, which is an icon schematically illustrating the appearance of a printer, a paper input settings display box showing information relating to paper input to the printer, and a paper output settings display box showing information relating to paper output from the printer to be displayed in a mutually correlating manner with indication lines. Namely, the system does not require the user to switch over the card when the user carries out both the settings of paper input and the settings of paper output. The paper input settings display box has radio buttons corresponding paper output sources. The user clicks one of the radio buttons to select a desired input paper source. The paper output settings display box has checkboxes corresponding to paper outputs. The user clicks one of the checkboxes to select a desired paper output.

A printer driver is provided in a host computer. When a print job occurs, the printer driver automatically selects the format of a plotting command to be output to a printer. As the command format, there are available two kinds of formats: a high-level printer control language format (for example, PDL), and an intermediate code format expressed in an intermediate language. When the latter format is selected, the printer driver converts a plotting command from an application to an intermediate code and then outputs the intermediate code to the printer. The printer converts the intermediate code to another intermediate code specific to the printer by a very simple processing, and then develops the intermediate code to a bit image, thereby enabling high speed printing.

To convert gray-scale data of each pixel of image data into pulse-width data for each pixel, a RAM is provided. The RAM has nine pixel memory regions corresponding to nine pixels a to i for forming, for example, a 3.times.3 pixel matrix on the output image. In each of the pixel memory regions, there are stored pulse-width data items corresponding to values which are permitted for gray-scale data to have. Pulse-width data items in the pixel memory regions are slightly different from one another among pixel memory regions. Gray-scale data of each pixel of image data and address word composed of gray-scale data of each pixel of image data and coordinates of each pixel in the 3.times.3 matrix is supplied to the RAM. Thus, pulse-width data corresponding to gray-scale data is read from the pixel memory region so that a laser drive pulse having a pulse width corresponding to the read pulse-width data is generated.
