Light guide type display apparatus

In the matrix, a positive type liquid crystal of the twisted nematic type is driven by a thin film transistor arranged on a transparent substrate. The polarity of the video signal, originally generated for a cathode ray tube, is inverted within a driving circuit and the inverted negative video signal is used to drive the positive type liquid crystal display. In the range of voltages of the video signal which correspond to the white level, the active matrix panel is driven by stretching the voltage of the video signal such that comparable voltage-contrast characteristics are achieved with the liquid crystal display as with the cathode ray tube. Leakage current of the thin film transistor during off-periods is reduced by setting a gate voltage during the off-period which is within the range of voltage level of the power source.

A solid state image sensor including a plurality of sensing cells, each formed of a switching transistor and a thin film sensing device, arranged in a line or a matrix. The switching transistor is a thin film transistor (TFT) of polycrystalline silicon and the thin film sensing device utilizes a layer of amorphous silicon formed on a lower electrode which is electrically connected to the drain of the switching.

Solid state image sensor

A multi-color liquid crystal display includes liquid crystal micro-shutters which open and close filters arranged as dots in a mosaic or stripe pattern. Fine and clear color image display and color graphic display are realized in the device wherein the filters are within the LCD panel, being formed on one substrate and covered by the driving electrode. The circuitry for driving the display includes a driving circuit for receiving three primary color signals, and a color selection circuit for selecting sequentially for input to the driving circuit each one of the three primary color signals. The color selection circuit selects the three primary colors only once per horizontal scan of the picture elements. The circuitry for driving the display also includes an element selecting circuit for selecting the picture elements in sequence. The driving circuit applies selected color signals from the color selection circuit to driving electrodes of a corresponding color in the selected picture element. The element selecting circuit has timing signal inputs for timing signals to time the selection of picture elements in sequence for driving. The element selecting circuit may select the elements at different times so that successive selected elements of different colors are selected at successive times. The times may be selected, and the periods of selection may have a duration, so that successive elements are selected at times that partially overlap one another.

A driving circuit for a matrix display panel synchronizes composite video signals to drive a plurality of data lines and a plurality of scanning lines arranged in a matrix. The driving circuit blocks the data of the composite video signal approximately during the vertical blanking interval of the video signal. Further, during periods when signals are not applied to the data lines, the voltage level is maintained substantially equal on both the scanning and data lines. The RMS potential on the display is thereby reduced and higher contrast is provided. In an alternative embodiment, lines of data are also omitted at regular intervals during the effective display period.

Liquid crystal display device having color filter triads

An active matrix assembly for a liquid crystal display device utilizing an MIS (metal-insulator-semiconductor) transistor array is provided. The active matrix assembly includes a transparent substrate, a first thin layer of silicon disposed thereon, an insulating film on the first silicon layer and a second thin layer of silicon disposed on the insulating film. The layers are selectively etched for forming a gate and the silicon layers are doped for forming a MOS transistor for a display element of the device. The two silicon layers and insulating material intersect to form capacitors with the upper electrode of the storage capacitor being the driving electrode for the liquid crystal. An active matrix assembly constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention permits 90 percent or more of incident light coming from above to pass therethrough. Use of such a transparent substrate in an active matrix liquid crystal display device permits utilization of a transparent liquid crystal drive, such as the field effect type liquid crystal for providing a maximum degree of contrast. Operation of the device with peripheral drive circuits for the gate lines and data lines including non-inverting rationless shift registers formed in the same manner as the active matrix permits a substantial reduction in power consumption due to reduced parasitic capacitance.

A dynamic divider circuit comprised of insulating gate field effect transistors and capable of operation using minimal current consumption in a reduced space is provided. Master and slave multiple inverters and an intermediate inverter are formed from complementary connected P-channel and N-channel insulated gate field effect transistors, the master and the slave inverter being directly coupled to the master inverter. The coupling of the master, intermediate, and slave inverters providing reduced current consumption and a more simplified circuit by utilizing the parasitic capacitance of said field effect transistors as a memory.

The temperature compensation circuit is characterized by a temperature detection circuit comprised of MOS transistors, at least two of which have distinct conductive coefficients for producing signals representative of variations in ambient temperature and a temperature signal converting means including MOS transistors for converting the temperature dependent signal into a temperature compensation value for effecting timing rate adjustment in an electronic timepiece. The temperature detection circuit and the temperature signal converter circuit are both formed of elements that can be monolithically integrated into the same substrate.

A voltage detection integrated circuit including a voltage regulation circuit for controlling the operation thereof is provided. The voltage detection integrated circuit includes a reference voltage circuit for producing a predetermined reference voltage, a voltage converter for converting a detected voltage for measurement and a comparator circuit for comparing the level of the reference voltage to the level of the converted voltage and for producing a comparison signal representative of the difference in voltage levels compared thereby. The voltage regulation circuit is coupled to the comparator circuit and the reference voltage circuit and/or voltage conversion circuit for selectively adjusting the level of the reference voltage produced by the reference voltage circuit and/or the converted voltage produced by the voltage converter, to thereby control the comparison signal produced by the comparator circuit.
