An optical isolator for a wavelength band of 400 to 470 nm includes: a Faraday rotator having a Verdet constant equal to or greater than 750 Rad/T·m at a wavelength of 400 nm to 470 nm; and a hollow magnet provided on an outer periphery of the Faraday rotator, wherein a magnetic flux density B(T) applied to the Faraday rotator is within the range of the following formula (1), and an optical path length L(cm) over which the Faraday rotator is provided is within the range of the following formula (2): B≤0.40 (1); 0.26≤L≤0.50 (2). Thus, a miniaturized optical isolator which is transparent at violet and blue wavelengths of 400 to 470 nm is provided.

A transparent ceramic material is manufactured by molding a source powder into a compact, the source powder comprising a rare earth oxide consisting of at least 40 mol % of terbium oxide and the balance of another rare earth oxide, and a sintering aid, sintering the compact at a temperature T (1,300° C.≤T≤1,650° C.) by heating from room temperature to T(1200° C.≤T≤T) at a rate of at least 100° C./h, and optionally heating from Tat a rate of 1-95° C./h, and HIP treating the sintered compact at 1,300-1,650° C. The ceramic material has improved diffuse transmittance in the visible region and functions as a magneto-optical part in a broad visible to NIR region.

A starting material powder, which contains a rare earth oxide that is composed of terbium oxide and at least one other rare earth oxide selected from among yttrium oxide, scandium oxide and oxides of lanthanide rare earth elements (excluding terbium) and a sintering assistant that is formed of an oxide of at least one element selected from among group 2 elements and group 4 elements, is produced by having (a) terbium ions, (b) ions of at least one other rare earth element selected from among yttrium ions, scandium ions and lanthanide rare earth ions (excluding terbium ions) and (c) ions of at least one element selected from among group 2 elements and group 4 elements coprecipitate in an aqueous solution containing the components (a)-(c), then filtering and separating the coprecipitate, and subjecting the separated coprecipitate to thermal dehydration.

Method for producing transparent ceramic, transparent ceramic, magneto-optical device and rare earth oxide powder for sintering

It is an object of the present invention to provide a magneto-optical material containing as a main component an oxide that includes a terbium oxide and having a large Verdet constant at a wavelength in the 1.06 &#x3bc;m region (0.9 to 1.1 &#x3bc;m) and high transparency, and to provide a small-sized optical isolator suitably used in a fiber laser for a processing machine. The magneto-optical material of the present invention contains an oxide represented by Formula (I), TbR)O, where x satisfies 0.4&#x2266;&#xd7;&#x2266;1.0 and R includes at least one element selected from the group consisting of scandium, yttrium, and lanthanoid elements other than terbium, at a content of at least 99 wt %.

A transparent ceramic having terbium oxide (TbO) in a molar ratio of at least 40%; and at least one oxide selected among an yttrium oxide, a scandium oxide, and a lanthanide rare earth oxide, wherein (1) the crystal structure of the terbium-oxide-based ceramic does not contain a non-cubic-crystal phase, (2) the mean crystal particle diameter is in a range of 0.5 to 100 &#x3bc;m, and (3) the ceramic comprises a sintering auxiliary having no incidence of deposition of a non-cubic-crystal phase in the crystal structure of the terbium-oxide-based ceramic. This transparent ceramic makes a magneto-optical element that performs at least as well as terbium gallium garnet or other existing monocrystal materials. It also makes a functional element for an optical isolator in the infrared region between 500 nm and 1.5 &#x3bc;m having very little scattering and very few birefringence components.

A powder including particles of an oxide of at least one rare earth element selected from Y, Sc or lanthanide elements and Zr oxide particles is prepared as a raw material powder, wherein in the particle size distribution of the rare earth element oxide particles, or in the particle size distribution of secondary particles in the case where the rare earth element oxide particles are agglomerated to form the secondary particles, the particle diameter Dvalue at which the cumulative particle amount from the minimum particle size side is 2.5% based on the total particle amount is in the range from 180 nm to 2000 nm, inclusive. Oxide and magneto-optical device

An optical isolator including a Faraday rotator that has a high Faraday effect and a high transmission factor in a wavelength used is provided. An optical isolator comprises at least: a Faraday rotator; a polarizer arranged on a light incidence side of the Faraday rotator; and an analyzer arranged on a light exit side of the Faraday rotator, wherein the Faraday rotator consists of an oxide that contains an ytterbium oxide (YbO) with a mass ratio of 30% or more.

An optical waveguide substrate is prepared by forming grooves in a silicon substrate in accordance with the pattern of a desired waveguide device, thermally oxidizing the silicon substrate to form a peripheral quartz layer surrounding the grooves, burying in the grooves a doped quartz glass layer having a higher refractive index, abrading the surface of the resulting structure to be flat, and forming on the flat surface a glass layer having a lower refractive index.
