A polyester resin comprising residues of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and a diol, which can be used for producing a molded article having excellent impact resistance, and a method of producing the polyester resin. The polyester resin has structural units represented by general formulae (1) and (3): Rin general formula (1) is an optionally substituted acyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group. Rin general formula (3) represents an alkylene group, and m represents an integer from 2 to 1,140, provided that a case where Rrepresents an ethylene group and m represents 2 is excluded.

Provide are a novel polyester resin that can be used for producing a molded article excellent in impact resistance, and a method of producing the polyester resin. Provided is a method of producing FDCA by which high-purity FDCA can be produced in high yield. 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid is produced by: bringing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into contact with an oxidant in an organic acid solvent in the presence of bromine and a metal catalyst; and allowing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and the oxidant to react with each other while removing water produced by the reaction.
