A liquid crystal display panel is provided and includes a pair of substrates facing each other with a liquid crystal layer therebetween. One of the substrates having, thereon, an upper electrode having a plurality of slits formed therein, a lower electrode facing the upper electrode with an insulating film therebetween and disposed so as to be adjacent to the substrate, and an alignment film formed so as to cover surfaces of the upper electrode and the insulating film. Each of the slits includes a linear portion disposed so as to be parallel to a liquid crystal alignment direction when no voltage is applied and two extension portions extending from both ends of the linear portion so that a distance between the two extension portions increases in a direction perpendicular to the linear portion while keeping a symmetrical shape with respect to the direction.

A liquid crystal display device of the present invention comprises an array substrate equipped with signal lines and scan lines deployed in a matrix arrangement, thin film transistors (TFTs) provided near the intersections of the signal lines and scan lines, and pixel electrodes of which one is provided in each of the pixel domains delimited by the signal lines and scan lines; a color filter substrate on which are formed color filters and common electrodes; and a liquid crystal layer placed between said two substrates; wherein the pixel electrodes are positioned so as not to overlap the signal lines, or not to overlap the scan lines, or not to overlap either, when viewed from above, and below the spaces between adjacent pixel electrodes, resin black matrices are deployed so as to overlap the pixel electrodes when viewed from above.

A display panel includes: gate lines disposed on a first substrate; signal lines extending across the gate lines and including portions, other than portions thereof that extend across the gate lines, disposed on the same surface as the gate lines, the portions that extend across the gate lines being disposed in positions facing the gate lines with an insulating film interposed therebetween; transistors having gate electrodes connected to the gate lines, source electrodes connected to the signal lines and disposed on the insulating film, and drain electrodes disposed on the insulating film; pixel electrodes connected to the drain electrode and disposed on the insulating film; a protective film covering the transistors and the pixel electrodes; and a common electrode disposed on the protective film.

A liquid crystal display device includes two substrates, liquid crystal therebetween, and sub-pixel regions. Each sub-pixel region is divided into first to fourth display regions by a first axis extending orthogonal to an optical axis of a polarizing plate and a second axis extending orthogonal to the first axis. Each first to fourth display region includes slit electrodes on the second electrodes along the first axis. First slit electrodes in the first display region and second slit electrodes in the second display region are symmetric relative to the first axis. A liquid crystal displayof the invention has a transparent substrateon which are provided multiple signal lines, scan linesand auxiliary capacity lines, plus TFTs and pixel electrodesthat are electrically coupled to the TFTs' drain electrodes D. The auxiliary capacity linesare formed with an Al&#x2014;Nd alloy layer coated with a layer of molybdenum. Each pixel region, except for the auxiliary capacity lower electrodeon the auxiliary capacity line, is coated over by a first insulating filmand by a second insulating filmthat is thinner than the first insulating film. Further, the auxiliary capacity lower electrodesare coated over by the second insulating film, and auxiliary capacity upper electrodesare provided on the surface of the second insulating filmat the auxiliary capacity lower electrodes. Thanks to such structure, a small-pixel-area or high-definition liquid crystal display, and manufacturing method therefor, can be provided whereby short circuits in the regions forming the auxiliary capacity are few, the auxiliary capacity is large, and display irregularities such as crosstalk or flicker are satisfactorily curbed.

A liquid crystal display deviceincludes: a transparent substratea plurality of signal linesand scan linesarranged on the transparent substratein a matrix; a plurality of auxiliary capacitor linesprovided between the scan linesso as to be in parallel with the scan linesthin film transistors (TFTs) each provided in a vicinity of an intersection of the signal linesand scan linesand pixel electrodesarranged in respective positions defined by the signal linesand the scan linesand each electrically connected to a drain electrode D of the thin film transistor (TFT); in which the thin film transistor (TFT)'s gate electrode G and the scan lineare covered by a gate insulating film formed by an insulating film (a first layer)and an insulating layer (a second layer)and the drain electrode D of the thin film transistor (TFT) extends to overlie an auxiliary capacitor electrodea, with the insulating layer (the second layer)interposed between the drain electrode D and the auxiliary capacitor electrodea. As a result, it will be possible to provide a liquid crystal display device and a method for manufacturing the same are provided, in which the capacitance of an auxiliary capacitor electrode is increased without reducing the aperture ratio of each pixel and which is suitable to realize a relatively small pixel area and high definition.

Liquid crystal display device and method for manufacturing the same

A liquid crystal display panelA of the invention has gate electrodes G of TFTs, scan lines, and auxiliary capacitor electrodes, which are coated with a first insulating filmcomposed of a thick insulating layerand thinned insulating layer. A part above the auxiliary capacitor electrodesis coated only with the thinned insulating layer, and drain electrodes D are extended on the first insulating film, which is not thinned, so as to coat the thinned insulating layer. On a second insulating filmprovided between the pixel electrodesand the drain electrodes D, contact holesare formed at portions above the drain electrodes D on the first insulating film, which is not thinned, above the auxiliary capacitor electrodes, and via the contact holes, the pixelsand the drain electrodes D are electrically coupled to each other. By providing such a constitution, a liquid crystal display device and its manufacturing method can be provided, with only a small number of bright point defects, and with an increased capacitance of the auxiliary capacitor electrodes without a reduction in the aperture ratio of each pixel.

An auxiliary capacitance line and a terminal portion of a liquid crystal display device are made of an Al or Al alloy layer and an Mo layer. The edge portions of a lower auxiliary capacitance electrode and the terminal portion are sequentially coated with a first insulating film, a second insulating film that is thinner than the first insulating film, and a third insulating film. The lower auxiliary capacitance electrode is coated with the second insulating film, and an upper auxiliary capacitance electrode is laid on the surface of the second insulating film on the lower auxiliary capacitance electrode.
