A vehicle differential apparatus includes: a differential case; two side gears; and two pinions. An axial center of each pinion is provided with a first pinion shaft insertion hole. A pinion shaft is inserted in the first pinion shaft insertion holes. An inner peripheral surface of the first pinion shaft insertion hole of each pinion is provided with two sliding surfaces that are slidable on one of two pinion inner peripheral surface-supporting portions of the pinion shaft, and a non-contacting surface that is not able to contact the pinion inner peripheral surface-supporting portion. The sliding surfaces and the non-contacting surface of each first pinion shaft insertion hole are disposed at positions adjacent to each other in the axis direction of the first pinion shaft insertion hole.

Pinion gears are rotatably carried within pinion gear receiving openings formed in a differential case. The inner pinion gear holding surfaces of the receiving openings are enlarged inwardly to form extensions to hold not only portions of the pinion gears that are located outwardly and that are to be held, but also part of inner meshing portions of the pinion gears that are disposed in meshing engagement with side gears in an overlapping manner. This construction prevents a tilting of the pinion gears and improves the durability.

A power transmission apparatus is provided with a housing, which rotates together with an input shaft, a differential mechanism, and a main clutch. The main clutch links the input shaft and the first output shaft. The differential mechanism distributes drive force that is inputted from the input shaft via the housing into a first output shaft and a second output shaft. The differential mechanism is provided with a ring gear that is provided within the housing, a sun gear that is provided within the ring gear, and a planetary gear. A plurality of receiving holes, which extend in parallel with a rotation axis L, are formed in the carrierat the same interval in a peripheral direction. A planetary gearis received in each receiving holesuch that the planetary gearcan rotate on its own axis. An inner gearand a sun gear, which are arranged with their axes aligned with the rotation axis L of the apparatus main body, are disposed within the apparatus main body. The inner gearis engaged with the planetary gearsat the outside thereof. The sun gearis engaged with the planetary gearsat the inner side thereof. An engagement part between the inner gearand the planetary gearand an engagement part between the sun gearand the planetary gearare displaced from each other in a direction of the rotation axis L so that they are not overlapped with each other in a direction of the rotation axis L.

A receiving portionfor rotatably receiving therein a planetary gear, is formed between a plurality of retaining protrusionsof a carrier. A connection portionextending annularly about a rotation axis L is formed on an outer peripheral of a distal end portion of each retaining protrusion. Through this connection portion, the distal end portions of the respective retaining protrusionsare connected to each other. Owing to this arrangement, each retaining protrusionis reinforced to minimize its deformation. As a result, deformation of the receiving portionis greatly reduced and the planetary gearreceiving in the receiving portioncan rotate smoothly.
