An output voltage from an O.sub.2 sensor is intermittently sampled and the sampled voltage is converted into a binary signal. The binary signal is applied to an electrical digital computer, and therein the following operations are carried out. First, the maximum value and minimum value of the applied binary signal are detected, then the difference between the maximum and minimum values and the sum of the maximum and minimum values are calculated. A reference value is calculated using the calculated difference and sum and the minimum value from a predetermined algebraic function. Thereafter, the applied binary signal is compared with the calculated reference value to generate a binary signal indicative of the comparison result. Then, the air-fuel ratio of the engine is adjusted in response to this binary signal calculated by the digital computer.

Method and apparatus for controlling the air fuel ratio in an internal

A method for controlling, according to the L-jetronic fuel injection principle, an internal combustion engine with a fuel injection valve fitted to its intake manifold, and an intake air flow meter. Repeatedly a first quantity representing the desired amount of fuel to be provided to the combustion chambers of the engine during the time period between the next two fuel injection pulse time points is determined, based upon sensed values of certain operational parameters including intake air flow, and a second quantity is determined as the time smoothed value of the first quantity. Optionally further the second quantity may be modified according to engine operational parameters. Simultaneously, at proper injection time points in the engine's operational cycle, the fuel injection valve is opened for a time corresponding to a third quantity which is calculated from the second quantity. A device is also explained, incorporating an electronic computer, which practices this method. Thereby, overshooting of the air flow meter is corrected for.

A method for controlling an internal combustion engine with a fuel injection valve fitted to its intake manifold. Repeatedly a first quantity representing the desired amount of fuel to be supplied to the combustion chambers in the next fuel injection pulse, a second quantity representing the proportion of fuel in one pulse which will adhere to the walls of the intake system, and a third quantity representing the proportion of fuel adhering to these walls which will be sucked off into the combustion chambers between two successive pulses are determined, based upon sensed values of certain operational parameters. Simultaneously, at proper injection time points in the engine's operational cycle, first from the third quantity and a fourth quantity representing the total fuel amount adhering to the walls a fifth quantity representing the actual fuel amount sucked off from the walls between two successive pulses is determined; then from the first, second, and fifth quantities a sixth quantity representing the actual fuel amount to be injected in the next pulse is determined; then from the sixth and second quantities a seventh quantity representing the actual amount of fuel from the next pulse that will adhere to the walls is determined; next the fourth quantity is updated by adding the seventh and subtracting the fifth quantity, and next the fuel injection valve is opened for a time corresponding to the sixth quantity. A device is also explained, incorporating an electronic computer, which practices this method.

An oxygen sensor which comprising: a case having an inlet means and an outlet means through which gas passes. A sensor element is installed within the case, and an oxidation catalyzer is arranged upstream of said sensor element within said case. The inlet means or oxidation catalyzer is arranged so that a part of the gas which is introduced through the inlet means into the case flows without passing through the oxidation catalyzer while the other part of said gas passes through the oxidation catalyzer.
